The only version of this step-pyramidal tower style still standing, the Loha Prasat ('Metal Palace') is modelled on a Sri Lankan metal temple from the third century BC, based on an Indian original of 2,500 years ago. Built by Rama III in 1846, it has 37 spires, one for each virtue needed to attain enlightenment. A labyrinth of passages leads to meditation cells (closed to visitors), with a spiral staircase to rooftop views. In order to reveal the Prasat, the art deco Chalerm Thai Theatre was controversially demolished in the early 1990s to create a park containing a statue of Rama III and the Mahachesdabodin Royal Pavilion for official receptions. Behind the wat, a market sells amulets.
