King Chulalongkorn Statue

King Chulalongkorn Statue review Rate it

Devotees of King Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V) gather on the anniversary of his death for rites at the six-metre (20-foot) equestrian statue he had cast in bronze during a 1907 visit to France. During his progressive reign (1868-1910) he learned about his subjects' concerns by disguising himself as a commoner. His portrait is widely venerated in homes and businesses, as well as on amulets, banknotes and busts used as talismans. Offerings made here on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, asking for luck, tend to include two of King Chula's favourite things: cognac and cigars.
