This one-time beau-monde haunt has hosted Jim Thompson and Scandinavian royalty, and a cult following of creatives and Asia obsessives. Moralistic literary notices dot the bookshelves, walls and even the menu at its superb, mainly vegetarian Thai restaurant. The exterior may be plain and the bathrooms basic, but it retains the original 1952 art deco lobby, Bangkok's first hotel pool (24-hour), writing desks in the garden and Thai dancing on Saturdays. A legend… but behave!

Discriminatory policies, rude staff, misleading website

This is a beautiful building and a cheap hotel. BUT read on...

First, the restaurant is meant only for guests, something not mentioned on the website.

Second and most importantly, they operate what is effectively a racist policy of not allowing mixed-background couples. I tried to visit for a meal and was initially told that they might make an exception to allow us to eat, until they found out that my wife was Thai (I am European). The reason was not even denied, This is not something that I have ever encountered in Thailand nor any other country. The staff were rude, too.

It is understandable that the owner wishes to avoid sex tourists in his hotel but to ban any Thai women with a non-Thai man is something practically unheard of since the 1960s. The policy would be illegal in many countries. Ironically, my wife - an educated professional - was actually born in the US (I am from the UK). Maybe if I had said that she was American we would have been tolerated!

Please avoid this hotel so that you do not support businesses with such appalling attitudes

Oh my God, is my old 80-ies haunt stll around and the amazing lobby, the awesome club sandwiches at the small coffe shop. Remember that, if you brought cpmpany upstais she had to leave ID at the front desk.
