Sake is obviously an integral part of Japanese culture, but the fermented rice drink's uses go far beyond just everyday boozing: barrels of nihonshu have been common offerings to the Shinto gods since ancient times. This illustrious history is celebrated in October at Nogi Shrine, where sake brewers from all over the country get together to show off their creations, from the divine to the mundane. The ¥4,500 entrance fee includes all-you-can-drink sake – which is why tickets for this one sell out well ahead of time every year. To book yours, email nogi_info@nogikaikan.jp.
