The Art Gallery of WA is a glittering gem at the heart of Perth’s Cultural Centre. The towering, modernist, pale-brick edifice of the main gallery sits alongside heritage buildings including the former Perth Police Courts. With wetlands up front, it’s a glorious spot where many a woozy weekend was lost in the throes of art appreciation. Housing the official state collection, accrued since the establishment first opened its doors way back in 1895, there are ridiculous wonders on offer. That includes Balancing Act - space devoted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. It's named in honour of the Whadjuk Noongar people, the traditional owners of the land on which the gallery stands. The gallery shop's one of the best places in town to grab a really cool present for loved ones, and Frank Café's great for a coffee date.
