The Swiss capital doesn’t skimp on Christmas festivities. The city’s two Christmas markets take over Münsterplatz and Waisenhausplatz, each with a distinct character. The first features mainly artisan products and handmade crafts, many made in the basement ateliers in Bern’s Old Town. It’s great for picking up unusual gifts you’re unlikely to find elsewhere, including handpainted silk scarves, pottery, jewellery by local designers, textiles and glassware. The second is a more traditional market, with edible goods, branded knitwear, belts and bags, antiques, clothes and children’s toys. Grab yourself some glühwein and a cornet of roasted chestnuts and browse away.
