One of the best pop-up ice rinks in the country is this jolly affair in Locarno’s main square. Whether you enjoy ice-skating or not, it’s a fun place to hang out of an evening or on a Saturday afternoon after a spot of Christmas shopping. Watch skaters totter and tumble from an ‘igloo’ hut around the edge, where you can have a drink and some nibbles out of the cold. When darkness falls the rink’s giant glitter ball comes into its own, reflecting coloured lights over the ice. A great activity for families, the rink is free for little ones and lessons are available if necessary. Skates can be hired on site.
