Daikanyama’s new shopping mall is not really a mall at all. Rather, it’s a collection of free-standing shops and cafés – including Kirin’s craft beer brewery, LA clothing retailer Fred Segal, and the first Japan branch of San Francisco’s Tartine Bakery – that all open up onto a pretty paved lane featuring wooden benches and greenery.
This is better than we expected – when we first heard about the new venue, which opened to the public on April 17, we were imagining yet another commercial concrete building complex. While there is not quite enough here to keep you busy for hours, it’s far more inviting to imagine sitting outsite on a terrace and enjoying a craft beer or latté before browsing the outdoor pop-up shops, which are set to change on a regular basis.
Log Road Daikanyama is built on top of the old Tokyu line tracks (very close to the current tracks) north of Daikanyama Station. Look forward to fresh, warm doughnuts with various flavours including matcha green tea and maple bacon, available at Fred Segal’s food section; Fred Segal’s ‘kitchen truck’ offering savoury dishes and a range of drinks; and six different kinds of craft beers at Kirin’s Spring Valley Brewery Tokyo.
