Set in parkland just south of Arthur's Seat, the main building here dates to 1687. Much of its original, last-gasp-Jacobean character remains, from the approach along a tree-lined drive to the ornate fixtures and fittings inside. Opulent antique furniture and lush upholstery complement the look of the hotel and its well-known restaurant, Rhubarb; the guestrooms, both in the old house or the modern extension out back, are similarly sumptuous, although contemporary comforts abound (plasma-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi). Peacocks and Highland cattle amble around outside in the grounds. Genuinely impressive.
