This Victorian building at Craiglockhart was used as a sanatorium for shell-shocked soldiers during World War I. Among them were Wilfrid Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, who met here in 1917 and wrote some of their best work while recovering from their front line experiences. The place gives a hint of the world of nearly a century ago, when Craiglockhart offered the men brief respite before they were sent back into battle. Sassoon survived, but Owen was killed a mere week before the war ended.
