If much of Varda's airy cinema has not lasted well, this classic 'two hours in the life of' still casts a sympathetic spell. Successful pop singer Cleo (Marchand), depressed by the imminent arrival of a doctor's report that could be very serious, quits her secluded, protected world for the Parisian streets and eventually meets up with a young soldier (Bourseiller), finding an unexpected intimacy and renewed hope. The fluid, whited-out photography gives the film a genuine grace, and the music session midway with Michel Legrand is a real joy. There is also a brief burlesque movie, featuring (among others) Godard, Karina and Eddie Constantine. Not every minute is as spirited as Varda would like us to believe, but in the cinema of enchantment this ranks pretty high.Author: DT
