Rollin' through TV shows, celebrity cameos and a hit single with Shaggy, Sacha Baron Cohen's feckless fictional homeboy was always bound for celluloid. But beneath its glossy blaxploitation veneer, and despite an odd jumble of stars and Cohen's mock-directorial interventions, this is a parochial feature-length sitcom. Indulging his gangsta fantasies in his west Staines 'hood, Ali is horrified to learn that the community centre where he coaches a 'Keep It Real' class faces closure. Persuaded into local politics by a corrupt Chancellor (Dance), he unwittingly becomes involved in a ruse to topple the Prime Minister (Gambon). But Ali has a herbal prescription for global peace. Unpredictability and blunt irreverence ensured Ali G's classic, even subversive comic status. Though he's too ubiquitous now to dupe real authoritarians, his film nevertheless proffers plenty of cheek - even if most of its gross-out gags come signposted.Author: AHa
