The Last Starfighter (1984)
Director: Nick Castle
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Turning to his favourite video game for solace after everything's gone wrong, Alex Rogan (Guest) finds that the game is a sophisticated recruitment aid for the galactic equivalent of the RAF. By beating the high score, he gets whisked off to shoot the baddies out of the cosmos and save our sector of the universe. All pretty preposterous stuff, but it doesn't take itself seriously for one moment, and even aspires to a gentle parody of the genre. The special effects are mind-expanding: computer-generated animation that is so good it's barely distinguishable from the conventional kind. Great fun, with some truly comical moments; a must for pulp-heads and video-junkies.Author: DPe
