One of those winsome, nostalgic beach movies (this one has a wounded seagull). Four gawky teenagers spend the summer on Long Island, learning the usual, bittersweet rites-of-passage lessons about life, love and loyalty. Director Perry was renowned for the way he probed human relationships. He's helped here by an insightful script adapted by his wife Eleanor Perry from a novel by Evan Hunter. The acting is also a cut above the average: Cathy Burns, who's since disappeared without trace, was Oscar-nominated for her depiction of a troubled adolescent.Author: GM

- Posted on Nov 11 2009 01:38 I saw this film when it was first released in 1969 in Massachusetts when I was 22, my own last summer of freedom, since I'd just graduated from college. The film shows so many phases of adolescence: innocence, camaraderie, sensitivity, sexuality, cliqueishness and cruelty. Since I was in late adolescence myself, the film rang true. I haen't seen it since, but I remember it as though it were yesterday. Highly recommended.
