A young couple just out of prison (they were jailed for playing indie pop) trawl Teheran in search of other musicians and the fake passports and visas that would allow them to play as a band in the West. This slight story is essentially a structural device enabling Ghobadi to present a documentary portrait of (and tribute to) the many underground musos whose determination to play their beloved rock, punk, jazz, folk or whatever is liable to get them arrested by the Iranian police. Mostly shot and edited in an eye-catchingly busy pop-promo style, the film is intriguing primarily as an ethnographic document which incidentally (and probably unintentionally) demonstrates that one can find as many inarticulate, pretentiously posturing musos in oppressed societies as one can in supposedly free ones.Author: Geoff Andrew
