Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Former factory that has been reworked into an eatery-cum-art space. Stylish but welcoming, it boasts a menu of salads, sandwiches and high tea. Small portions.

This bar and restaurant at the former Tetley’s factory is the product of heavy investment, and this newly refurbished space is now both a centre for contemporary art and a place to eat and drink. The interior of the distinctive red brick building is functional and stylish, cosy and welcoming, making it a suitable option for a range of clientele; whether you’re treating your gran to lunch or just hanging out with friends, you won’t feel out of place. Plaques, flags and brewing paraphernalia adorn the walls and pay tribute to the building’s rich manufacturing heritage, making a visit to Tetley’s as nostalgic an experience as it is a modern one.

The inviting space pays tribute to the building’s rich manufacturing heritage, while ensuring that the food and selection of alcoholic drinks on offer are sufficiently à la mode to entice trendy young professionals. Meals are served on homely earthenware; the couscous salad is warm and full of flavour – something the haddock and egg salad unfortunately lacks. Portions are a little ungenerous, but can be padded with snacks from the bar menu, which includes the likes of salted pretzels.

Lunchtime prices are in line with most similar cafés: sandwiches start from £5.50, salads from £6.95 and larger plates from £9.95. Those with unlimited time and in need of some indulgence can splash out on an impressive high tea with the full works, including finger nibbles and sweet treats.

A visit to The Tetley wouldn’t be complete without sampling its namesake bitter, but beer enthusiasts may be disappointed to find an absence of other local breweries’ produce. Instead, there is a wide range of European bottled beer, and cider in the fridge and on tap, and there has been no expense spared on sourcing a diverse range of wine and pricey Champagnes to accompany an evening meal.
