There’s a line from ‘Jurassic Park’ that echoed hauntingly through this critic’s head as ‘Avatar’ unfolded: ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ James Cameron is one of those scientists: so in love with the technology, with the possibilities, that he never pauses to reflect upon the practicalities of cinema, of storytelling, of connecting with an audience.

That quote is doubly relevant when one considers the cultural similarities between these two blockbusters, both of which justified massive expense by promising a quantum leap forward in visual effects. But where Spielberg utilised technology in the service of a tight, witty script, Cameron is simply out to astound. There are moments when you almost expect Sam Worthington’s moody, ever-present voiceover to be replaced by the self-styled king of the world yelling at his audience: ‘Are you awestruck now? How about now? Now?’

When his scientist brother is killed a week before shipping out to the distant planet Pandora, wheelchair-bound US Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is offered the chance to go in his place. On Pandora, Jake meets his avatar, a remote-controlled host body generated from his brother’s DNA and designed to blend in among the native Na’vi, a race of nine-foot blue hunter-gatherers living in peaceful harmony with their homeworld, Native American style.

Or rather, Native Californian: Na’vi civilisation is a mishmash of half-formed Hollywood ideas about the supposed superiority of ‘primitive’ cultures, tossing around buzzwords like ‘spirit’ and ‘energy’ without ever approaching a cohesive set of beliefs. But ‘all this tree-hugging shit’, as Jake describes it, is only the most obvious defect in Cameron’s dire, cliché-ridden script. From the bluntly expositional nature of the early scenes to the gung-ho, sub-‘Aliens’ banter of Jake’s fellow soldiers, this is screenwriting on autopilot, cobbling together unripe ideas without a scrap of originality or emotional resonance.

It’s hard to fault ‘Avatar’ as an immersive visual experience. Pandora and its luridly coloured inhabitants are beautifully designed, though none of this ever feels remotely real. But this was supposed to be the movie that changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ultimately, Cameron’s signature achievement may have been to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the oldest of all Hollywood maxims: all the money in the world is no subsitute for fresh ideas and a solid script.

  • This is @ Wayne S. Hey Dude, just because you have no scriptwriting skill's don't go bashing James Cameron. I think this reviewer is a dumbass too. WOW Lonodn'ers must hate them selves for not moving over here in the states where everything is BETTER! I myself LOVE this movie, I saw it on day one, and I saw it 3 more times in IMAX3D.. Face it 3d is the new way movies are gonna come out, if some of the story gets warped so what...I think Sigourney's line "where's my Cigarette?" was somewhat dumb but I blame her for not saying WTF?? to stand up for herself... That's the only really dumb thing in the whole movie... BTW, when the Blu-ray/DVD comes out the "mating" scene get's extended... :-) can't wait to see more of Neytiri's T&A... My main point is I want everyone on this site to realize that STORYLINE doesn't always matter it's HOW you tell the story...Take Star Trek movies (1970's early 90's) They were okay movies, what made them not sustainable?? They were boring and mostly for just a small demographic of Star Trek nerd fanboy's.. I liked the new 2009 version way better, not just because Zoe' Saldana either... I liked it because anyone can watch it and not get bored out of their mind. It's the same thing with AVATAR, you people might not like it because you like Intellectual movies well, not everyone like a snoozer.. If J C made AVATAR the way you people wanted it then it would have been 4 hours long and felt more like a Star Wars movie, Star wars has good action scenes then boring "filler" script.. I slept through Star wars Ep 1,2,3.. they all sucked. I will not buy their Blu-ray's. I want to finish by saying that You must be careful what you guys post online becasue the whole English speaking world can goto this site and read your bias dumbshit reviews. AVATAR is the best movie ever, your all pissed you didn't come up with this idea before JC did..

  • LOL! The peaceful blue-skinned Na'vi must be purple with shame that their greatest admirers display such belligerence. "Avatar" = over-hyped.

  • I agree with Chris. Why every film must have a complex plot to be a masterpice?? I think that Avatar with it's simple story is way better than many of those overrated "intelectual" and somehow twisted films. And I like many serius and intelectual films (2001 A space odyssey for example) so don't say that I only care for blockbusters.

  • Some of you are so easily amused. Why didn't you just wait for Avatar, the video game, if all you want is to be entertained? I like films that are pure entertainment too, e.g. "Zombieland," but I even that film had well-written characters and a hell of a kick-ass plot. "Avatar"... bo-o-oring!

  • I long ago stopped listening to reviews by film critics like tom huddlestone. They always talk of "solid scripts" and "good character builds" which usually equals elongated sections of film devoted to soul searching issues and some obtusely hidden messages - boring, boring, boring!!! Have some imagination and just go with the fantasy world that a film like Avatar creates you guys - hey you might even start enjoying life more instead of psychoanalysing everything and trying to appear intellectually 'superior' than others! I found it an immensly entertaining and spectacular movie. Roll on the next one please Mr Cameron!

  • it looks like for on ce the french understand someting coming from the states better than the brits. This film is unique bringing something new to how films are made; the story, though not original is treated in a new way. If the destruction of home tree didn't bring tears to you, you completely missed the point. saw it and will see it again. WELL DONE CAMERON

  • This is the only film that's ever put me to sleep. Come on guts...we live in 3D...you soon get used to 3Dd special effects. What you want is a lively original script and a gripping plot. The final indictment: when i woke up after my 15 or so minutes nap, I seemed to have missed nothing. Some plot!!!

  • Yes, it's true "jockcelt" that I left the fray at one point, but you no doubt missed my return on Jan 24. To be honest, I found the abuse somewhat amusing. Reminded me of the Monty Python version of the Spanish Inquisition where they tie the old lady up in a comfy chair and poke her with soft pillows. Terrifying. And then the endless assortment of drews, dre's and dregs is one of the funniest ongoing routines I've witnessed since I saw an endless parade of clowns pop out of a tiny little car at the circus. So, not to drop the topic for which we've all assembled, what can I say about "Avatar" that hasn't been said? How about this? The next time James Cameron steals a well-worn plot from an old Disney movie (Pocahontas, anyone?) I hope troubles himself to do more than just change the names, the size and skin-color of the noble indigenous nature- worshippers, and then try to hide the ruse by mixing things up in a shiny 3D, CGI, stop-motion batch of borrowed technology.
