There’s a line from ‘Jurassic Park’ that echoed hauntingly through this critic’s head as ‘Avatar’ unfolded: ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ James Cameron is one of those scientists: so in love with the technology, with the possibilities, that he never pauses to reflect upon the practicalities of cinema, of storytelling, of connecting with an audience.

That quote is doubly relevant when one considers the cultural similarities between these two blockbusters, both of which justified massive expense by promising a quantum leap forward in visual effects. But where Spielberg utilised technology in the service of a tight, witty script, Cameron is simply out to astound. There are moments when you almost expect Sam Worthington’s moody, ever-present voiceover to be replaced by the self-styled king of the world yelling at his audience: ‘Are you awestruck now? How about now? Now?’

When his scientist brother is killed a week before shipping out to the distant planet Pandora, wheelchair-bound US Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is offered the chance to go in his place. On Pandora, Jake meets his avatar, a remote-controlled host body generated from his brother’s DNA and designed to blend in among the native Na’vi, a race of nine-foot blue hunter-gatherers living in peaceful harmony with their homeworld, Native American style.

Or rather, Native Californian: Na’vi civilisation is a mishmash of half-formed Hollywood ideas about the supposed superiority of ‘primitive’ cultures, tossing around buzzwords like ‘spirit’ and ‘energy’ without ever approaching a cohesive set of beliefs. But ‘all this tree-hugging shit’, as Jake describes it, is only the most obvious defect in Cameron’s dire, cliché-ridden script. From the bluntly expositional nature of the early scenes to the gung-ho, sub-‘Aliens’ banter of Jake’s fellow soldiers, this is screenwriting on autopilot, cobbling together unripe ideas without a scrap of originality or emotional resonance.

It’s hard to fault ‘Avatar’ as an immersive visual experience. Pandora and its luridly coloured inhabitants are beautifully designed, though none of this ever feels remotely real. But this was supposed to be the movie that changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ultimately, Cameron’s signature achievement may have been to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the oldest of all Hollywood maxims: all the money in the world is no subsitute for fresh ideas and a solid script.

  • I'm not young, I'm not a fanboy and I appreciate decent cinema in all it's forms. I'd just like to clear that up at the start. I enjoyed this film. No, the storyline is not remarkable. No, the characterisation is not sparkling or particularly adult. But at least the story, such as it is, is clearly told in a linear, old-fashioned fashion, with none of the schizophrenic mania found in many recent blockbusters, and crucially the plot is sufficient to showcase the films technology, which is pricipally what this is about. And what technology! I was entranced by the more gentle visuals, though some of the action scenes did addmittedly feel pretty 'been there, done that'. But the jungle, the plants, the sense of visual scale was unprecedented as far s I'm concerned, and overall I loved it. I don't think that there's any grouds for saying that visual excellence is a debased part of modern filmmaking, so purely from this point of view Avatar gets 4 stars from me. I'd accept that if you're unmoved by a visual spectacle then there's not much here for you, but then many of the benefits of the information age must be passing you by, which seems a shame. See it in 3D, IMAX if possible, and it's certainly awesome enough to be going on with.

  • Ok paul,I presume you have seen how much business is generated by "kids computer games"? Wii X box DS PSP PS3..I bet there is a console in your house somewhere... or a p.c./laptop.Its a hugely popular phenomenon. And who is slagging off action figures Gnarla??? I ate sweets when I was 8 , am I not allowed now I am an adult??? AND kidult is not a word Paul!!!! NOW THE MOVIE>in its construction, Alex you are correct AVATAR brings little that is 'new' to the stage.. you are missing the whole point..Some of us get it,let me share it with you.Yes it brings little new!(who decides what is new incidently, whats new to a 20 year old may not be to a 40 year old,and i bet 60 year olds have experienced stuff the 40 year olds have not..) other than the groundbreaking visuals,It does not claim to be NEW!!! Its not the content of the story(DANCES with wolves, last samurai.compare it with whatever "HES GONE NATIVE ON US" type film you want to..they also are ,both stunning movies by the way Christian,) its the Canvas Cameron chose to tell it that astounds us...If you dont like visual art and CGI and computers, then get off your keyboard.because after the human imagination, thats where all these backdrops, mountains dragons, and blue men were realised. just because Pele was a brilliant brazillian footballer does this mean that Kaka is not allowed to be!!!!!!!! he is allowed surely, to use his feet to kick a ball beautifully, Is he somehow mocked simply because we have seen it before? or Ronaldinho brings "nothing new" to the game.because someone else has done it... one is permitted to do something good more than once you know, otherwise Spielberg would have stopped at Jaws or Duel!!!.Its a poor poor argument people..Should all artists drop their pallets and brushes as paint has already been used by some itailians many years ago??I CAN compare it to Star wars.I was there in '77.I lived it. I walked out of the cinema mesmerised as I did after AVATAR..... I ....No no thats not right..........WE... love film... and this film is the fastest grossing movie evr!!!ok so 3d has caused a lot of the income, but like jockcelt said,WE are privilidged to watch this. And you guys who want to dissect it? I am glad I still go to movies leave my picky movie critic judgement at the door, unwind relax and let the experiance flow over me,because for 2/3 hours........ I am in Pandora/tatooine/cybertron/Klandutthu/Gotham/ krypton/Naboo/mos eisley/ancient rome/1876 in last days of the Empire Japan/1757in colonial north america.. Stop wingeing and enjoy the film... If you do not like it DONT GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Avatar unveils the saddest picture of film critics in decades. In order to praise this shallow, 2D, unimaginitive, generic "world", the majority of respected and experienced critics had to throw down the toilet all their previous film education so they could hold the candle in the dark while Cameron performs an additional lobotomy on the already over-lobotomized audience. The hypnotised general audience will always bow under the burden of the pompous, constant, direct PR attacks of the studios but that's where the critics should stand their ground. Now it seems their ground is as big as Pandora. In short - The worst outcome of Avatar is a massive self-ridicule of the critics that puts them right where they belong. Down the toilet.

  • I disagree with the star rating on this review. OK yeah the plot is formulaic and the script is low quality but if you treat this as a spectacle and don't go in expecting to be wowed by unbelievably advanced effects (you will be) AND be intellectually enriched then this film definitely merits a ticket to a 3D cinema screening. Its a Hollywood blockbuster. Anyone who genuinely thinks that it appears clever or subversive from the adverts will probably find it challenging anyway.

  • If only they had spent 1% of the $300M budget on the semblance of an adult plot or script. This is kidult cgi boredom, unless your idea of awesome is computer games. Tedious and overhyped if you are an adult.
