There’s a line from ‘Jurassic Park’ that echoed hauntingly through this critic’s head as ‘Avatar’ unfolded: ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ James Cameron is one of those scientists: so in love with the technology, with the possibilities, that he never pauses to reflect upon the practicalities of cinema, of storytelling, of connecting with an audience.

That quote is doubly relevant when one considers the cultural similarities between these two blockbusters, both of which justified massive expense by promising a quantum leap forward in visual effects. But where Spielberg utilised technology in the service of a tight, witty script, Cameron is simply out to astound. There are moments when you almost expect Sam Worthington’s moody, ever-present voiceover to be replaced by the self-styled king of the world yelling at his audience: ‘Are you awestruck now? How about now? Now?’

When his scientist brother is killed a week before shipping out to the distant planet Pandora, wheelchair-bound US Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is offered the chance to go in his place. On Pandora, Jake meets his avatar, a remote-controlled host body generated from his brother’s DNA and designed to blend in among the native Na’vi, a race of nine-foot blue hunter-gatherers living in peaceful harmony with their homeworld, Native American style.

Or rather, Native Californian: Na’vi civilisation is a mishmash of half-formed Hollywood ideas about the supposed superiority of ‘primitive’ cultures, tossing around buzzwords like ‘spirit’ and ‘energy’ without ever approaching a cohesive set of beliefs. But ‘all this tree-hugging shit’, as Jake describes it, is only the most obvious defect in Cameron’s dire, cliché-ridden script. From the bluntly expositional nature of the early scenes to the gung-ho, sub-‘Aliens’ banter of Jake’s fellow soldiers, this is screenwriting on autopilot, cobbling together unripe ideas without a scrap of originality or emotional resonance.

It’s hard to fault ‘Avatar’ as an immersive visual experience. Pandora and its luridly coloured inhabitants are beautifully designed, though none of this ever feels remotely real. But this was supposed to be the movie that changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ultimately, Cameron’s signature achievement may have been to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the oldest of all Hollywood maxims: all the money in the world is no subsitute for fresh ideas and a solid script.

  • @ Lamberticus's question "please give me a list of Sci-Fi or Fantasy films to date, which have convinced you are real?" Answer: Matrix, Odyssey 2001, Bladerunner, Mad Max 2, Terminator 2, Princess Mononoke, Clockwork Orange... These SF movies are so far beyond Avatar's childish "floating islands" and blue elves themes packed in 3D animation that will be obsolete in a few years time that I really cannot understand how can you compare it to anything that has actual value that goes beyond that 300 milion budget. This film is NOT worth that money. That's a loooooot of money and since there are films made with 10% of that budget that are masterpieces of writing and artistry... Well, considering the list you showcasted it seems that you don't go beyond these big budget commercial movies... Please watch Princess Mononoke - it has the same basic plot but it is refined far, far beyond Avatar's incredibly shortsighted plot and unoriginal creature and world design. You see, Cameron knows that people have mostly plain, uninteresting minds and he plays that card masterfully. Why are all the leaves on the planet green? Why does the forest look exactly like Earth's forests? Why are the flying things so blatantly unoriginal (a mash-up of dinosaur-dragons)? Why are the people of Avatar just a blue version of Legolas? Why is all machinery much like The Transformers and Terminator 3? Why isn't there actually ANYTHING original in the film? Because it was intended TO SELL and nothing more. What is so special about the animation? NOTHING! It's just better than before and thats it! It's the same thing but polished. And you see, there is a huge problem here - it will go old and it will go old fast precisely because it is solely based on animation and NOTHING more. Why does Odyssey 2001 still look insanely REAL (it was filmed in 1968)? Because it was made to last forever. Avatar will last for a year or more and will be obsolete once animation goes cheaper in a few years time. So that's why this movie is nothing special. If it had a complex, original script, then it could last longer.

  • I don't normally reply to these threads but to see that you had only given this superb film two stars, has got me totally riled. O.K it's not going to win awards for a piece of story telling, and the 'Action Man' villain is comically cliche, but..don't forget this movie was made for everyone, including children. Does it need to be drawn up from some complicated, convoluted plot to satisfy? Not for me it didn't, but then again I can go and watch a firework display and enjoy it without someone reading me a story at the same time, which let's face it, it's what Avatar is. Right from the start, I was blown away by the stunning 3D visuals, the time, effort (and yes, money)..that has been put into creating Camerons alien world is phenomenal. I would give the film at least 4 stars on the merits of those criteria alone! Remeber, this is a piece of FILMmaking, and as for "none of this ener feeling remotely real..", oh come on? There are floating islands, UV plants, dinosaurs and 15 feet blue people, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REAL..ITS A STORY. And to add to that please give me a list of Sci-Fi or Fantasy films to date, which have convinced you are real? Star Wars? LOTR? OK Aliens maybe? Please if you want an imaginitive, creative, beautiful and immersive world, go and watch Avatar and ignore this guy. If you want a creative, twisted and complicated, believable piece of sci-fi storytelling then go buy an Iain M Banks nove or something...

  • Yeah, the movie without gay cowboys, eating pudding, can't be no good. When the man is no good at anything at all he become critic. All you are is just emotional castrates looking for faults everywhere. Yeah, yeah, the script is not the best one in history, but you know, i don't really give a f**k. There are some things in life, that are intended to be embraced only with emotions (love, children). I know that my girlfriend is not the most beautiful woman in the world, but i love her. And you, critics, you think you are so smart, because you just see that everything is so imperfect? Bad for you.

  • As if to prove my point, the reviewer after me: "The story is a real heart warmer, rammed full of morality encouraging us all to be that little bit nicer to each other, what’s wrong with that? I loved giving two fingers to the baddies and delighting when the Action Man marine was FINALLY killed. I reveled in having all my hairs stand on end as the lovers unite together to fight the oppressors." I despair. When this civilization falls, it won't be idyllic blue-skinned forest elves taking its place, but something far more dark and evil...

  • I don't know how anyone can't love this film! All you haters just lighten up a bit! The cinematography and action sequences were phenomenal- I don’t use the word lightly. I spent the whole film in awe of the beauty showcased in front of my little eyeballs. I’m sure some dweeb could go through with a fine toothcomb and find a load of ways in which they can prove “my argument of the films perfect visual spectacle to be erroneousâ€ but when you look at the overall film who really gives a monkeys? The films a right sensual indulgence. As for criticising the script ok there’s no big line that jumps out at you to say for years to come, but apart from that I haven’t got any complaints. It may not be constituted as a reworking of the standard Hollywood narratives but is that a bad thing? The story is a real heart warmer, rammed full of morality encouraging us all to be that little bit nicer to each other, what’s wrong with that? I loved giving two fingers to the baddies and delighting when the Action Man marine was FINALLY killed. I reveled in having all my hairs stand on end as the lovers unite together to fight the oppressors. Whats more I thought it frightfully original, and rather daring, that a film intended for the mainstream market depicts humans as the bad guys. Its nice to remind us of our own imperfections and f the flawed nature of humanity in a guilt free context. The storyline is FAR from awful. Forget the script, this film is well worth the time of anyone whose emotions run higher than a sedated goldfish, the prancing pixels will be enough to get you going- get out there and experience it!

  • How depressing it is to realize the millions of impressionable minds who will walk away from this film seeing its manipulative self-satisfying self-hatred as profundity rather than the calculated formulaic profit-driven lowest common denominator pap it is. When a civilization detests itself this much it is on its way out.
