For the past year, 3D has been a guarantee of box-office gold, as proven by the runaway success of ‘Avatar’. But now, for the first time, a film arrives for which the 3D element may prove to be a commercial hindrance. It’s not only that ‘Clash of the Titans’ will compete with ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘Avatar’ for the nation’s 3D screens. More critically than that, the film's conversion to 3D (a decision taken late in the filmmaking process) has rendered this campy, unashamedly old-school but still highly enjoyable blockbuster rather painful to watch.

In story terms, ‘Clash of the Titans’ doesn't stray too far from the beloved 1981 Ray Harryhausen classic which spawned it. The setting is mythical Ancient Greece – an age of Gods, monsters and muscular men in little chainmail skirts. Sam Worthington is Perseus, an orphaned demi-God drawn into the battle between man and the immortals when Hades (Ralph Fiennes), lord of the underworld, threatens to unleash his great sea-beast, the Kraken, on the city of Argos. Accompanied by a ragtag band of warriors, Perseus sets off to learn the secrets of the Kraken and end the reign of the Gods once and for all.

There’s no ignoring the fact that ‘Clash of the Titans’ is a mess: the plot is episodic and rushed, the dialogue blunt and occasionally laughable, and there are far too many characters, few of whom leave much of an impression. Both Worthington and love interest Gemma Arterton look like they’re on a strenuous Aegean package holiday, but luckily they’re surrounded by the likes of Fiennes, Pete Postlethwaite and Liam Neeson as Zeus, whose commanding, armour-clad presence seems, at times, to be the only thing holding this crumbling edifice together.

Other notable names don’t fare so well: Danny Huston gets a mighty fake beard but just one line as sea-God Poseidon, Mads Mikkelsen does little more than bare his teeth as burly swordsman Draco and, most egregiously, Jason Flemyng gets a terrific backstory and some superb melting-face makeup as ruined ruler Calibos – and that's it. It's is a recurring problem throughout the film: with dialogue and character motivation cut back to the bare minimum, there’s no way for anyone to express themselves except through action.

But, luckily, this is where ‘Clash of the Titans’ succeeds. Whatever the flaws in the script, there’s no faulting director Louis Leterrier’s visual ambition: this is a film of mighty vistas, beautifully designed beasts and intense, well-structured combat sequences, all rendered in eye-popping, though still rather fake-looking, CGI. Taking the lessons of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ to heart, Leterrier goes all-out for excess: his computer-generated camera soars above sprawling cities, endless deserts and blasted underworld hellscapes, lending the film a dizzying, epic scale.

A shame, then, that the addition of 3D has rendered much of this grandeur all but unwatchable, blurring the image to a headache-inducing degree and adding absolutely nothing to a film which was obviously shot in two dimensions and should have stayed that way. As an experiment in high-Hollywood style over substance, ‘Clash of the Titans’ is a very entertaining ride. But take our advice: sidestep the 3D and see it the old fashioned way.

The movie was great -- if you're not aware of the "real" mythological story behond Perseus. The story was so different from Greek Mythology! Like in the film, Acricius was the husband of Danae, Perseus mother. However, in mythology, Acricious was Danae's father. And at the end of the film, Andromeda didn't get to marry Perseus, when in Mythology, he did. Anyway, the movie effects were great. It's very fast paced, makes your heart beat faster.

Took my young cousins, lads both, to see this and it occured to me that I was around their age when the original Oliver "Clash" came out in the Eighties. They enjoyed it tremendously and what the Hades so did I. In fairness to Director Louis Leterrier he paces and moves the story along with a lot more urgency than most established practicioners of the genre the biggest problem is Worthington who never sells it. Still there's Neeson and Fiennes having fun hamming it up and Lads on mid term or of middle age could do worse than Gemma Arterton as Io and Alexa Davalos as Andromeda.

Andy just because I don't like this film doesn't mean to say I hate all films. Speaking of 6 year olds, they will love this!

andy

Yes Lian, it IS a review site, one that encourages(as many forums also do)great exchanges between ordinary film buffs about the films we are all paying to go and enjoy(or pay and hate in noctor's case) so I think you are kind of missing the point though Lian. The way you put your points accross gives people an impression of who you are. This, in turn, goes with the review that you leave. If the review appears to be written by an incoherant 6 year old with learning difficulties and no understanding of basic sentence construction and grammar, then the said reviewer is bound to receive scorn are they not? Primarily because the facts of life are this.If you can not articulate your views properly, then who cares what they are??? 4 star film

Andy you are even sadder! I only give honest reviews. I did'nt like the film and that's My choice, not yours or any one elses! I do enjoy movies, My top 10 include Terminator 2, Gladiator and Shaun Of The Dead, but I just didn't like this crap, end of story!

Andy

Well hasn't everyone got their pants twisted on this one. Jock insults everyone and baits them. and you guys all bite,he must be laughing into his popcorn at you all.Noctor still an idiot(not one positive review on any film he sees, there are all'this years turkey'0 stop going then you tool. catfishgirl and jerry got it bang on I say. and yes Lian you can note speak much less type. I have lots of oppinions also, like many others on here but just because they pick you up on your awful review do not assume they have no friends,at least they have an education. (please do not vote next week, you are dangerous) NOW THE FILM. it had flaws and plot holes the size of a canyon, but it was much better than the original and was a great fast paced early action flick to kick off the early season. pretty people, villains, heroes and a big f**k off monster at the end.. Totally engaging ott nonsense. LOVED IT.

Catfishgirl

The kids loved it. It's a bit of a mess but with fun monsters and some fairly nifty fights. Miles better than the spectacularly crap original. I laughed like a drain when he pulled that owl out of the chest as my partner had been chuntering all the way into town about how it had ruined the the first one!

Lian,do not assume that jock is a boys name. Neither should you guess it is a pseudonym(that is when we,the grown ups,use an alternate name usually to remain annonymous) Your English is still awfull, run along now,I believe the Tweenies have anew review site. This film was great fun, that is all.

Turkey of the year! When the big face appeared in the sky in the statue knocking scene I wanted to leave, I knew I was in for a shit two hours! This lead actor can't act! He was bad in Avatar although I liked that movie as a whole, and terrible in T4! Bad flick overall, wait for Dvd because there is very little 3-D in this dire bad acted 'movie', Worst cinematic experience since Drag Me To Hell!

Do they actually teach English in schools anymore? nxt, sed, lil, bro, gud, wnt. What do these words even mean? This is a rhetorical question,as I know what they mean.It is just infuriating to see them typed out. It is lazy and as it happens deeply upsetting. Sorry Lian(if that is how it is even spelt).I can not respect the views of a person who can not utilise our language correctly. 'nothing to me jump out or seemed 3D'. 'do u wnt 2' ' sed it was the rubbish 3D film he had seen yet' The pronoun `I` always appears in capital form. It is actually quite sad. You just can not speak properly. I have read a few people rate the '3d' version of this film badly.I found it added to the visceral feel of the movie. A good show all round, well done. It certainly did not offend me half as much as this person's grammar, spelling and sentence construction.

I went to see this film taday and as one who remembers gonig to see the original I was looking forward to see hoe the upgrades faired.I saw it in 3D and must say I thought it was fantastic, not stunning, but great old fashioned OTT villain and hero sword and sandal fantasy escapism. and then I read this reviewe trashin it!! no fear I got to the end and who wrote the review??? that buffoon Tom Huddlestone. His negative reviews only inspire me to see the films he trashes!! This film was fun and should be enjoyed for that and that alone, and for the recored the 3D was excellent,or is the 3D in all the films you have made sharper Tom? If you are aorund 40 years old and want to be taken back to your chilhood,go along and see this flick, its reat fun Its also another fine addition to the ever improving Sam worthington back catalogue,. Tomas Noctor are you still here?

MildNotWild

Saw this with friends at the weekend. General reaction was that it was “ok, but not great. As others have said ... the cgi/3d is plain bad in places – did the producer have it in for Hades? His ‘3d’ shadow was really bad. Medusa was too tame given the build up.

Linda

Was okish but not brilliant. Kids however did enjoy it as love the Greek mythology fantasy films. Originally throught we were sat too close as did struggle with the 3D affects in some parts, fight sequences seemed confused/blurred etc but after reading other reviews seems that this is common criticism of the film - Also think it will be completely lost on DVD. Not a patch on Avatar which was visually stunning in 3D but on positive you do get to see more of Sam worthington in his Titan attire which has got to be a plus point!?

Thomas Noctor

Very poor movie! Fight with Haydes lasts ten seconds, that lead actor is very poor, although Avatar was good, he was terrible in that and T4 aswel! Avoid this nonsense, at all costs! A toy owl? What was that for? Worst cinematic experiencesince Drag Me To Hell!

David

Dreadful. A thorough disappointment, Poor 3-D visuals (don't expect anything close to Avatar) and sometimes dreadful dialogue (parts of it were so cheesy I had to look away and cringe). Save your money.

Lauren - I used to work with a couple of Aussies. Like I say, Sam Worthington can't work out who he is in this movie - and whether English, Yank, or Aussie. The (lack of) continuity's bad. And, yes, Gemma Arterton's as much at fault for her character's depth - I think the idea is you read the script before signing up to a movie. A 1 star movie.

lauren

I agree with most of what Tom Huddleston says athough I disagree in his assessment of Ralph Fiennes being better than Sam Worthington- Fiennes seemed to invest in the funny voice and CGI a little too much to sell his character. The female characters were essentially useless which was disapointing- Io was okay except for her lack of depth (script's fault not Gemma Arterton's). The CGI was decent although I don't think the 3D adds anything (perhaps they should've invested more time and money into making the script a bit less 2D instead). The story line was so-so although visually it was a pretty good-looking film. It was refreshing to see a lead Australian allowed to use his natural accent and not an RP or American as is ususually the case in these films (I mention this because Dicky references it as a bad mix of UK/US and Aussie- sorry Dicky but you've obviously never heard an Australian talk before...). Overall, yeah it was fun but I'm not going to bother buying it on DVD. Next time I want a 3D epic hit I'm going back to see Avatar.

Dicky

This is a desperately bad movie. Ignore TO’s rating – it’s way too generous, as pretty much everyone else (below) seems to agree. This film is barely worth 1 star. Unimaginative script, bad wigs, bad make-up, bad CGI, bad accents (Worthington’s varies between well spoken English, New Yorker, and broad Aussie), and very dodgy CGI. At one point one of the soldiers waves a hand and tells Sam Worthington what he’s seeing is Argos. I wondered if that meant the town in question was cheap and cheerful and looked as thought it came from a catalogue, or whether he was talking about the original Greek town of Argos. Bear in mind this - Ralph Feinnes can be drawn to bad movies like a moth to a flame … Ralph stars in this one!

Bubo

Have just watched the film - thoroughly enjoyed it - agree with "Mike Said" - approach it in the right spirit, leave your brain at the door. Found it much more thrilling than Avatar, and ignore the naysayers, the CGI effects, and any sequence with Hades, are fantastic and overblown - some really inspired visual talent involved with this film. Won't win any oscars for screenplay or acting, but what are you expecting? 4 stars for ridiculous fun

mike

Good popcorn saturday matinee fun. Approach it in the right spirit & it's alright. But don't see it in 3D....

Manny

if my tickets were free, I would have left the cinema within 20 minutes of the movie. percy jackson & the lightning thief had a better storyline.
