Six years after 9/11, the spectacular destruction of Manhattan is once again the premise of a Hollywood fantasy, though ‘Cloverfield’ is not your father’s disaster movie. Unaccountable trauma takes the place of scientific rationalisation; partial experience replaces the view from the war room; and the signifiers of the World Trade Center – fireballs, collapsing towers, dust clouds and drifting paper – are everywhere. Whether you find it all cathartic or exploitative is probably a matter of taste.

Following Steven Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds’ in presenting an ignorant, panicked, individuated response to armageddon, ‘Cloverfield’ takes that film’s single shot of fantastic carnage captured on a home video camera as its whole aesthetic.

The film is an ersatz relic à la ‘Blair Witch’, the purported contents of a camcorder discovered in the aftermath of a mysterious behemoth’s catastrophic rampage through New York. The camera belongs to Rob (Michael Stahl-David), a twentysomething about to move to Japan; his leaving party takes place on the night of the attack, and we follow his and a few friends’ experiences from dusk to dawn. Footage of an earlier, happier day out punctuatesthe main action.

The film is produced by JJ Abrams and, like ‘Lost’, it leaves the big picture vague while furnishing enough local information to keep the ride compelling. Though not without humour – our cameraman Hud (TJ Miller) provides goofy comic relief – this is at the gruelling end of the disaster movie spectrum, unabashedly mining its 9/11 resonances and neo-vérité grammar to considerable effect. The humans are ultimately pretty disposable, but the monster and the camera are worth attention.

  • Go and watch this film!!! I've caught alot of films already this year, and this one has to be one of the most original, inventive and darn right amazing films i've seen so far in 08. Those of you commenting on the shaky camera work...well...thats the idea isn't it chaps, a first person account of events that are truly terrifying. Yes, there are the blatant similarities to the 9/11 events, but ultimately this is an idea, a monster movie, that just tells a superior story, not only that, it is truly jaw dropping imagery. I really can't big this movie up enough, it is THAT good and you should check it out if you dig being really adrenalized, fantastic!!!

  • The worst film i've seen in ages. Hard to describe why - it just had nothing. So disappointed! At least the film finishing brought a chorus of "What a load of crap!" so I knew at least I wasn't having a rubbish time alone. Oh Dear!

  • This would be an acceptable movie abouit a huge alien that smashes its way about New York - but the far too excessive use of shaky camera work (90% +) really does make it a no see. Even the worst home movie maker would not shake a camera around as much as these guys do - I can accept some shaking during the action when running away but all the time - several peeps left the cinema - I wish I had and avoided a sick headache.

  • I've not seen this film yet. But believe me critics and reviews never deter me, and i've seen very few turkeys. I will come back and say a few words when I've seen it, the teasers look terrific. Enjoy film.

  • What a bunch of old women complaining. Please go and see this if your IQ is more than 1 (IQ is nothing to do with having a degree you idiot!). You must be open minded to like this film, it requires your individual imagination of how it would be to be in the shoes of the character, brilliant. It's exactly what Dave said previously "cloverfield isnt about being a big hollywood disaster film, its not godzilla. its about viewing a disaster, as it happens through the eyes of an ordinary person, and its very cleverly done". I can't believe people are comparing it with the poor, comercially done, version of Godzilla! I child playing with a plastic model of a lizard is better than that film.

  • complete waste of time... do not go and watch it.. the endings real SHIT, the camera was shaking throughout. made my girl feel sick, not recommended. rather watch something else, not value for money at all. ending is too abrupt and makes u go like "what the f***?" so go ahead if u have loads of spare time and money.

  • Bloody great film. Done expect good camera work for crist sake. Its about a home video being made as Godzilla zombie alien predator offspring demolishes NYC. Good fun, had the missis grasping the seat in front-thought was superb. What I can't wait for is alien versus predator versus cloverfiel versus arni versus van dam versus chuck noris!awsome plot I think you will agree.!!!!

  • Great Film, It has been i long time since the audience were quiet at the end, until 1 girl next to me went "whew!" which sums it up really. a rollercoaster of a ride and def worth seeing, I find the film appealing as you have to take part in what is going on (obviously not physically) I do like films more edgy than is made for a more general audience. I only hope that they do not make a sequal as the ending was ace.
