Before ‘Ghost Town’ was released in the US, writer-director David Koepp suggested that he had doubts whether Ricky Gervais would be able to carry the project. It’s an odd remark, especially when Gervais is the last person who should be blamed for the film’s failings. Assuming his usual guise as the jittery, acid-tongued malcontent, he excels as a dentist with the Groucho-esque moniker of Bertram Pincus. He dies for seven minutes during a colonoscopy and, on leaving hospital, is able to see members of NYC’s dead who have business to attend to in the land of the living. The spirit of a city slicker played by Greg Kinnear railroads him into stopping his graceful other half (Téa Leoni) marrying a smug lawyer, but when Pincus gets to know her, well, you can guess the rest…

It’s not unlikeable – but no effort has been made to make anything more of the Scrooge-comes-good model. Gervais’s sweetly pathetic performance masks many of the failings of the by-the-book quirky direction and workaday script, but Leoni is decent as the romantic foil and Kinnear’s slimy-everyman act works well. Enjoyable as it is to see Gervais trying (and often succeeding) to make something of the mediocre dialogue, it’s not enough.

Seems some people will laugh at anything. If you've seen 'The Office' you'll know Gervais has never made a film that comes close to it in terms of comical affect. He makes a decent effort in this film, but the plot is predictable and the dialogue very weak. A waste of 2 hours.

Really not bad at all, considering Gervais was the worst thing in 'Night at the Museum'. Quite funny and touching. Obviously silly at times, but still, better than other films of the genre.

It depends on who you are. you either live it or you hate it. I love it the first 3/4 of the film had me so close to suffercating myself as i was laughing so much, the last 1/4 is typical hollywood with some funny moments but thats where the funnyness dies out.

light and amusing. as a lot of people have said Ghost whisperer - but bonus main character is NOT annoying and actually speaks properly.

Hilarious film...definately one of the funniest films I have seen EVER...would strongly reccomend this to everyone... Gervais is hilarious...left everyone in the screen laughing... plenty of "laugh-out-loud" moments!

Just before I saw Ghost Town, I found Ricky. Was it on Letterman? Or was I first attracted to the "ads" for the movie. Doesn't matter. I loved every aspect of this movie. The concept, the acting, the actors. It was funny all the way through, as well as sweet and sentimental, with a joyous ending. I never heard of Ricky until the movie interviews. I'm now a loyal fan and am hooked on his pods, UTUBE, and web site. GREAT job Ricky. Looking forward to your next efforts...in spite of your "minky teeth"..

This film is basically a film-length version of `Ghost Whisperer` with a formulaic love-story overlay. It is NOT hilarious (in an Airplane sort of way), but it IS witty (like Notting Hill). There are no laugh-out moments, especially if this film is watched in Northampton, where the clientele appear to be mostly into toilet, or juvenile humour (great lovers of Mama Mia, for instance!) Ghost Town is a conventional `romcom` with a very predictable plot line. For all that, if one is prepared to check in one’s brain at the door, its an enjoyable film in an easy-going, non-hassaldrous sort of way. The current rating of 3 stars seems about fair, even though I am giving it a four-star rating because I really liked the Gervais character (when it was at its most abrasive).

I saw this film yesterday with my family. I haven't laughed so much at a film in my life. Excellent delivery by Gervais and respectful nods to Monty Python humour abound. If you understand Gervais and British Humour, you will love this film. Highly recommended - whens the DVD out ??

this film was great! although there was a point where i did question its ratings as a 12a, as there was so much swearing!

Well worth it. Its no block buster but I smiled all the way through. Well cast, great music. This is a subtle film that is clean, uncomplicated entertainment.

A reasonably amusing popcorn movie, don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. Gervais was fine in this, played the role of a grumpy old man well and Greg Kinnear was good. A tale of redemption a bit like like Christmas Carol, Wonderful Life or Groundhog Day.

'middle class liberals will enjoy it'? whats taht supposed to mean? and i ahve watched it and it is better than a lot of the films i have recently seen. ricky gervais may not have been the ideal leading man, well done for trying though.

This film i one of the best films of the year. With the hunky Ricky Gervais playing the main man how can this be a bad film?... He is a sex god/legend!

Heather

I'm not a fan of Ricky Gervais but his performance in this film was notable. There were plenty of laughs along the way and the music throughout was catchy. Overall, easy-watching material that was enjoyable. Well done!

Robin Harewood-Lee

What a disaster - ashamed that Gervais agreed to appear in this load of treacle and have his own reputation shattered. Take Gervais' usual anti-hero dry humour, dilute it by 50% and then towards the end of the film dissolve it completely (he is made to see the error of his ways and become a sugar-coated smiley face). Quite the worst film I've seen this decade!

Literally fantastic, Ricky is awesome. Not your regular stupid comedy. Best film of the year, catch it in the cinemas quick!!
