Sally Hawkins is a real delight in Mike Leigh’s new film as Poppy, a 30-year-old Londoner with a bubbly nature and an ever-present laugh that teeters between lovable and annoying. Hawkins’ performance, and Leigh’s harnessing of it, is a tease: when we first see Poppy, cycling through the West End and joking with a grumpy bookshop assistant before joining her friends for a late-night drunken session, we don’t know what to make of her. She’s loud, joyful and indulges in terrible jokes; surely there’s something wrong with her?

The trick that Leigh and Hawkins finally pull off so cleverly by the end of 'Happy-Go-Lucky’ is that we’re entirely in cahoots with her. Poppy is a mirror to us all: if we find her blind optimism and sunny nature hard to swallow, perhaps there’s something wrong with us instead? By then, too, we know that Poppy is not the blinkered soul we may first think: she is compassionate, perceptive and harbours her own sadnesses like the rest of us.

Leigh always finds plot in character, and ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ is more of a portrait than a story; a film that’s built around one performance. He is less concerned here, unlike, say, ‘Secrets & Lies’ and ‘Vera Drake’, with following a driving narrative than with minutely observing Poppy through her relationships with others, whether it’s the kids she teaches at her primary school, her repressed driving instructor (Eddie Marsan, excellently playing a heavy-duty bag of hang-ups), her close friend and flatmate Zoe (Alexis Zegerman) or her older, more settled colleague Heather (Sylvestra Le Touzel), whom she joins at flamenco lessons after work. In that sense, it’s comparable to ‘Naked’.

It’s a study in sadness versus happiness, a study in teachers and the taught, a study in how we carry with us everyday the burdens of what we have and haven’t learned. You know you’re watching something both delightfully light-footed and acutely meaningful when Leigh moves so nimbly between scenes at Poppy’s school, her flamenco class and her driving lessons. There’s also a wonderfully moving scene, darker and more poetic in tone, when Poppy encounters a tramp late at night. It’s a funny film – a surprise perhaps after ‘Vera Drake’ – and, crucially, it aches with truth.

  • thank you Liv, I wish i knew you with a viewpoint such as this!, sane, human, alive... Is it personal temperament that makes the nay-sayers hate the film, the character so much?

  • One of the best films I've seen in a long long time . I'm quite shocked to see the negative reviews but then again going by the mega buck "entertain me I'm too dumb to think for myself" rubbish that's continually hitting the screens it doesn't shcck me that much. This film demands that you switch off from analyzing and just emerge yourself in connecting with real life characters. The character of Poppy is inspirational, her enthusiasm for life and seeing the positive in everything and for having sincere respect for others is heart touching. How she dealt with the homeless guy was superb. She shows true resiliance and is a role model for individuality actually I'm sure Poppy wouldn't be at all put off my the negative reviews posted on this site. I would definitely recommend this film and if someone I knew didn't quite get what its about, then its a sure sign they need some counselling to open up to their own humaness..

  • I was in France, and don't speak french, this was the only film playing in english on a rainy night. I think in hindsight i would have prefered to stand out in the rain. The characters were not real, the script so blatant and obvious they each spoke over the last words of each others sentences, and what the hell was the go with the homeless bloke? social commentary......hmmm,

  • I have never felt strongly enough about a film, whether good or bad, to make the effort and write a review; I never actually visit any film review sites. But on this occasion I just had to find somewhere to vent my... disbelief. Disbelief that things like this are allowed to be produced - it is horrible. Forcing reviewers to give one star is just plain wrong, as something that is as painful to watch as this should get nothing but warnings - a pirate symbol would be appropriate. Being a social moron is not the same as being happy go lucky...

  • Never trust a film that has been praised at some European film festival (Berlin in this case). I only gave this film one star, as this site does not do minus stars. The worst film I have ever seen. I could only stand one hour of it - and only stayed this long in the vague hope that the moronic, irritating lead would meet an untimely end. It looked like the result of giving some no-hoper meeja-studies students a camera and telling them to amuse themselves for a bit. Mike Leigh, a producer? Best oxymoron of the year!

  • Wow, what a great film! So moving and true to life!Definately one focusing on characters rather than a plot but what amazing characters! The acting was superb throughout, especially Sally Hawkins, so much humanity and realism in the relationships, struggles and joys they encounter. Especially loved the developement of the character Poppy who seems odd at first but who you have to love come the end. One of the most unusual and best films i've ever seen!

  • I watched the first 15 minutes of this movie and could not stand to watch anymore. The reference to tits, the fake drunken nonsense and absolutely irritating accent by the main character totally put me off. It just goes to show we brits are very rarely good at comedy or film making. Please can we just leave it to the Americans. In all honesty a waste of my money. I should have saw that The Times rated it highly - very pretentious reviewers.

  • I have NO respect left for time out or their ability to judge films after their review of this film. There WAS no movie. Staring at a blank screen could have provoked more emotion and intrigue than this "film" did. Timeout were blatantly paid to put a half decent review. If not they need to fire whoever wrote this. Its nonsense. You can't even call it a film. The thought of this movie makes me angrier than when i watch those animal cruelty videos by PETA. IM SO GLAD I DOWNLOADED IT AND DIDNT GO TO THE CINEMA. MAY THE DIRECTOR NEVER GET FUNDING TO MAKE ANOTHER FILM AGAIN!

  • A wonderful film in my opinion, although as demonstrated in these reviews it will not be to everyone's tastes. It is certainly not driven by plot but is much more of a character study. Personally I found Poppy a very endearing character. My reaction to those who have criticised the acting would be to mention that Sally Hawkins (who plays Poppy), received the award for Best Actress at Berlin Film Festival for her efforts. If you're wanting something that feels more honest that the current offerings of homogenised film tat that they put out in spades, then I recommend this film.
