It’s surely no coincidence that when Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), the comic-book-reading New York teenager who decides to buy a coloured wetsuit and become the superhero of the title, winds up in hospital after his first outing as a vigilante, he reads ‘Watchmen’. Like that story, the series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr, on which ‘Kick-Ass’ is based is a comic about comics, presuming a substantial knowledge of the icons and conventions of the superhero genre. It’s an index of how successfully that genre has established itself in the Hollywood mainstream over the past decade that such postmodern, self-referential fare is now deemed apt fodder for major studio releases.

Puzzled that no one has ever tried to put comic-book theory into practice, Dave hits the streets in the name of righteousness, overcoming early setbacks to achieve hero status with a little help from MySpace and YouTube. He also attracts the attention of father-and-daughter vigilante team Big Daddy and Hit Girl (Nicolas Cage and Chloë Moretz) and arouses the enmity of crime lord Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong), whose son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) sees a chance to dabble in the hero game himself.

Director Matthew Vaughn (‘Layer Cake’, ‘Stardust’) directs with efficiency and a good sense of action while Johnson puts in an engaging turn that maintains sympathy and helps paper over some of the plot’s more jerky, episodic aspects. Wearing its sources on its Spandex sleeve, ‘Kick-Ass’ fairly bulges with references to other comic-book movies, especially the ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Batman’ franchises; Cage’s stilted delivery as the Dark Knightish Daddy is a nice touch. There’s some intriguing play around ideas of closetedness – a perennial concern of the genre – with Dave’s secret life leading classmates to presume he’s gay. Other conventions are touched upon but left unexplored: while it is constructed around three father-child pairings, for instance, the film leaves Dave’s single dad a cipher.

The bond between pre-teen Hit Girl and her Big Daddy, meanwhile, is as intense as it is outrageously violent, rooted in such affectionate larks as his shooting her at close range to familiarise her with the use of bullet-proof vests. The duo are responsible for many of the picture’s numerous fatalities, shown in more detail and with more gusto than in most superhero films (or most 15-rated films, for that matter). The sight of Hit Girl slicing and dicing half a dozen thugs to the accompaniment of the ‘Banana Splits’ theme tune locates ‘Kick-Ass’ in the post-Tarantino landscape of hyperfictional ultraviolence. Any gestures at a version of realism or the pathos that might result from someone actually trying to be a superhero are lost in the wash.

Quality Movie! I wasn't expecting this! I was expecting a spoof with a 12 rating. How wrong was I? The 11 year old 'Superhero' (altho I'd call her an Assassin) was superb, great character. I actually got very uneasy watching the torture scene, the opening scene was good too. This film starts off funny and then gets very dark! A gore fest and I loved every minute of it, didn't want it to end! To the reviewer that said it wasn't original, is The Dark Knight original? No, Was it a classic, YES! This too is a classic in My opinion, ignore the haters and let them watch their chick flicks! A must see!

And so, the girl/man /freak who has been posting as me comes out to play again. I know who I am sonny jim. So now there are multiple posts by people who think they are me,very mature I must say. People who know me know my views. People who imitate me only serve to flatter me. They have an obsesiion and need mental help. lets set the record straight here. great film. lots of swearing lots of action. its fiction. and the person who says I have an obsession with children?? I believe that may be you.. loved the film.

alana

I could not agree more with truthteller. We go to the movies for a release.this film had loads of laughs.as a teenager I can honestly say that we dont learn to swear on our eighteenth birthdays. That would just be silly. its fun and its only acting. And as truthteller says, lets not all get moral here. great film 4stars.

TRUTHTELLER

why dont people just lighten up and enjoy these movies, I though that the clue was in the title of the movie. as many before have said,it is fiction after all. you have to watch these films a couple of times to get the feel of the movie, its acting by the kids for the kids I guess. having watched it again this week with my cousins and our friends and thier friends and some more people as well we all laughed alot and out loud. I think phoney morality is weak, this is artistic licence and hey after all its kick ass..he he he he

DV

Superhero film with no aliens! I liked it. I hesitate at saying good vs evil, but the baddies had it coming! Geeks will love it.

Big Daddy

Two hours of pure entertainment! In the tradition of Judd Apatow only funnier and with more ‘soul’. Good laughs, Chloë Moretz and Nic Cage are brilliant! Very refreshing indeed!

jock

I agree with you crashandburn and you are correct that the films themselves wont make us all blade weilding nutters

Sutton

A very funny and enjoyable film. I'm surprised the film was not an 18 certificate given the violence and language, but that should not detract from it being a fun movie. I though Nicolas Cage was surprisingly good, as indeed were the rest of the cast, particularly Chloe Moretz.

John

Brilliant entertaining film going to see it again. This is a must see movie.

I urge people to see this film, it has a bit of everything in it... comedy, action, horror style violence, and emotionally dramatic scenes too. It is a good blueprint to the comic adaptation movie as the changes that have been made for from the source material have only enhnaced it on the big screen. Cage is magnificent as is young Chloe Moretz, and Aaron Johnson holds the lead very well in the face of a cluster of great characters each looking to steal the scenes from eachother. Mark Strong as the villain of the film is also a solid choice, and overall this is easily the best film of 2010 so far...

Truthteller, its Easter and there is a pulpit and soapbox free at our chapel if you want to preach morality!! Movies ARE NOT REAL! THEY ARE FANTASY. THEY USE ACTORS. MOVIES ARE PRETEND.THEY FILM THEM WITH BIG CAMERAS. Seriously dude ,do you think that this is a slice of real life like we see on crimewatch, the news and documentaries ??? Or,( as the rest of us do) do you see this as pure, over the top, in yer face, mock satirism set in a fantasy world where 11 year olds can actually pull this sh*t off? If you thought that this was real then i am afraid that it is YOU who are underdeveloped and way out of touch. Adult/parent/teen or all three!!! This premise was done over 20 years ago in robocop2 with an 11 year old mocking/immitating the role of an adult, its not new,but the delivery in this film was ....well... KICK ASS!! We do not watch this stuff and then decide to stab people/or become super heroes or fly off buildings. Kids carry knives because of peer pressure and that existed in the 50s too(west side story) I dont think that there will be a glut of 11 year old lasses wearing wigs dropp kicking the bad ass perps down the precinct this saturday night! Stop over reacting and moralising cinema... Just enjoy it for f***s sake!!

Notaconservativeidiot

While I agree that the film wasn't overly deep or thought provoking I am at least intelligent to understand that it wasn't meant to be, it is obviously merely satirizing violent hero films by showing everything in unrealistic extremity. And honestly "Truthteller" you are nothing but an idiotic conservative fool and a slave to the media. Teenagers are not all idiots, the only ones who act upon films are the insane ones (also the case with adults). I am only a teenager yet by reading your post it seems I have already surpassed your pitiful intellect.

I thought cage played the comic book character brilliantly, he and hit girl were not supposed to be "real". I thought this film was far more engaging, cool and plausible than the mess of Kill Bill. Kick ass was a moral and human character and the juxtaposition between this and the comic book super hero immorality of Hit Girl and Big Daddy was an thought provoking lode. I also found the film quite moving and times and there were many well crafted and funny scenes.

If you would enjoy a pre-pubescent Kill Bill, the gun porn of Wanted, the storyline of Speed Racer and thought Transformers was “AWESOME, then this film is for you. However Sin City fans will be crushed that the battery cable scene has been cut to allow more time for gun porn. A surprisingly empty cinema, mostly single guys and a gang o’ lads, not looking for anything deeper than some stylised violence, a few laughs that rarely come and of course an attractive love interest now Megan Fox is past her prime. I wanted to enjoy it, but given I care a lot less for guns than my American equivalent, it was a bit of yawn and lacking the real violence or key scenes from the comic. The film brilliantly fulfils an American male adolescent’s fantasies, but over here we like our violence hard and real and the girls who talk dirty are old enough to wear a bra.

Joe

Original take on the comic book story. It was sometimes funny and Aaron Johnson really proved himself as an actor here. The violence overtakes the film in the second half - and it isn't all funny - but the script was still smart enough to make the film quite enjoyable. A lot better than last year's "Watchmen"!

The script is humorous but somehow made me shed a few tears in some scenes. Love it. Hit girl stole the show with her witty attitude and awesome actions. Don't miss it.

Ed, I agree with you … Nick Cage has been in some dreadful movies. But, he did win an Oscar for Best Actor in “Leaving Las Vegas – he was exceptional. So don’t write the bloke off entirely – he needs to be a bit more choosey about the parts he plays. I think he’s quite good in Kick-Ass. “Hit Girl is definitely the star of the show – she’s brilliant.

After seeing the trailer, i went along to this with the attitude that i would either love or hate it...I loved it, it made me chuckle throughout, and on a couple of occasions laugh out loud...yes its violent, yes it sbloody but as with previous comments it is done in a lightheated way, and the fact that it is for the most part an 11 year old girl doing the fighting and killing against hardened criminals makes it all the more humerous. Cannot wait for this to come out of dvd so i can watch it again.
