‘The Ship That Sank’ would be a more appropriate title for writer-director Richard Curtis’s latest and most disappointing entertainment. It’s a cripplingly self-conscious and self-satisfied tribute to the roistering last days of offshore British mid-’60s pirate radio before the meanies from the ministry pulled the plugs.

It’s also the kind of musical comedy where the actors seem to be having more fun than any audience could ever share. This overlong, poorly paced and slackly directed ship-bound farrago not only wastes its treasury of golden oldies – Hendrix, Kinks, Small Faces etc – but magically contrives to reduce the chaotic, creative spirit of the sexual and cultural revolution to a mere mechanical catalogue of trite and surprisingly sentimental sex-drugs-and-rock ’n’ roll clichés, each fatally underlined by multiple and repetitive reaction shots.

If there are compensations, they come courtesy of a few diverting performances. The movie’s depressingly few incidences of genuine feeling come from Tom Sturridge who is sweet and appealing as the public schoolboy taken under the wing of his godfather, ship’s captain and Radio Rock boss Quentin, played by Bill Nighy as a self-parody in made-to-measure Regency-collared suits. Philip Seymour Hoffman does a turn as the radical, Emperor Rosko-like  DJ in rivalry with Rhys Ifans’s self-serving immoralist Gavin.

Elsewhere, pickings are slim:  the talented Ralph Brown is wasted – he’s cast as Wee Small Hours Bob, a misjudged amalgam, presumably, of ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris and dysarthric Danny from ‘Withnail & I’ – and the same is doubly true of such comic talents as Chris O’Dowd, Rhys Darby and Nick Frost.

  • I really didn't fancy this film going in and should've trusted my feelings. It was just woeful. A great cast, with some really good performances, just couldn't make up for the appalling script and plot. Hoffman, O'Dowd, Nighy and Frost are all great, but it is just completely unwatchable. The casual misogyny that permeates the whole movie is just unforgivable in 2009. What on earth were they thinking...?!

  • I didn't live through the sixties, however I still feel entirely qualified to comment on this ghastly film. It is not the idea, music or even the acting that is at fault; they're all quite good. Its the awful plot, pace and script that let it down. I wouldn't call myself PC, but this film was deeply misogynistic. It isn't just a few tongue in cheek sexist jokes. People WERE sexist in the sixties, but surely there were a lot of interesting, independent & intelligent women about? But there is not one to be found in this overblown Curtis crapfest.

  • This wonderfully evocative film reminds me that I used to listen to Radio Caroline in a cupboard at the top of the stairs and that without Pirate radio, we'd all still be listening to the BBC Light Programme. Anyone who doesn't know what this means is way too young to be commenting on this film. It's about a boat load of men and a lesbian in the sixties - expect some lesbian jokes. It was before women's lib and being PC simply meant you were a policeman! If you understand where I'm coming from, go see the film. You'll be thoroughly entertained. Oh, and take a sea-sick pill.

  • A sterling effort from Bill Nighy is not enough to save this film. Fatally flawed plot an script. I'd suggest steering clear.

  • I went to this film thinkning it would be "feel-good' but was really let down. Didn't find it funny at all and no story/romance/excitement.

  • Yep, this film was the pits. No redeeming features, barely raised a laugh in the cinema i watched it in. Think cast/crew/PR peeps have been invading this site trying to up the star average.

  • When I saw the bad reviews I knew this would be a movie worth seeing... Guess the reviewers were too young or forgot the magic of the 60's.... and thought this was a serious historical piece. Shame on them , probably couldn't find their proverbials with a flashlight. The acting was believable (I have been a radio presenter and have met characters like these!!) the music brilliant and the ending poignantly funny. Ignore the reviews and go and enjoy a nostalgically happy 60's.
