Time Out says

Both the first film in CinemaScope from Warner Bros and the first Western in the widescreen process from any studio. This yarn of a cavalry medical officer inheriting command of a wagon train, and fighting both Indians and smallpox, has its moments; most of them thanks to the script rather than the ponderous direction, although Sam Fuller, credited with the adaptation from a James Warner Bellah novel, disowned the film after screenwriter Russell Hughes' revisions ended up on screen.
