Does the world need another comedy about weddings? Co-written and co-produced by Noel Clarke, who also has a supporting role, ‘The Knot’ gives us Matthew McNulty and Talulah Riley as two Londoners who encounter various obstacles, physical and emotional, on the way to the altar. There are echoes of ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ in its depictions of male and female banter, and there are base laughs, mostly involving toilets and hackneyed depictions of West Africans and Spaniards. But weddings are such easy fare for cinema that it’s tough to find new ways of looking at the heightened feelings and mishaps that come with getting hitched. ‘The Knot’ mostly plumps for the usual clichés and stereotypes.

  • Thank you Jonny. I couldn't agree more. I have read all the reviews and wonder exactly what is going on. I watched it in Leicester Square with 200 people who laughed and enjoyed it. The film got some decent reviews from a lot of people. maximum 2 stars yes. A lot of the one star critics have been very personal and its been very much directed at Noel Clarke and how gross the jokes were. C'mon! have you not been at the cinema in the last 10 years? Are seriously telling me The Knot is the most offensive film made recently? It is a lot better and funnier than A LOT of other wedding films out there. But the intensity (and the tenacity) of the criticism tells me there is something else here. The extreme, nasty and sarcastic criticism sounds more like an attempt to do a Mr Clarke's 'character assassination' than to do with the merit of (or lack of) the film. Which makes it all rather unpleasant. But I'm sure mr Clarke, will dust himself off and carry on regardless. Star Trek next. keep writing guys.

  • WOW!!! What a field day all the critics [professional and others] are having with The Knot ... BUT ... I can say for certain that there many films that are given 5, 4 or even 3 stars that have bored me to death. The Knot never intended to be a recording of the (minor) mishaps that occurred in the run up to the marriage of Kate to the future King of England. It is not meant to be an intellectual study of the 'English' wedding. It is simply meant to be a 90 minute exaggerated look at what could well happen at the weddings of so many of us lesser mortals. The proof will be in who and how many movie goers see it ... and laugh at those bits that are indeed funny and relate to those bits that are touching... more importantly appreciate the great acting of so many of the actors. Let the audience decide.

  • I always respect and usually agree with Dave Calhoun's comments (he makes a really good film editor, so much better than Geoff "elitist" Andrew), so if anyone connected to making this film is so easily offended by Dave Calhoun's comments, then they should check out the reviews by the broadsheet newspaper film critics, which are even worse! ONE-STAR reviews across the board from The Independent, The Guardian, Evening Standard, The Observer and The Independent on Sunday. Comments range from.... "plotless and humourless" to ...."It's like the most inept wedding speech you've ever heard, and it lasts an hour and a half" to......."'crass, unfunny and charmless" and, finally, to ......"almost everything is reduced to gross-out moments that are about as funny as a yak's poo."

  • Is it as bad as some of the reviews say? No but it isn't as good as he or his mates say. In places it is funny, in places touching but at times really rather unnecessarily smutty and gross. It could have done with a further edit of the script before it was transferred to film and probably a bit more polishing in the edit but it has an uphill task being the last release after a number of awful wedding films. Its much better than the Wedding Present and the 5 Year Engagement but not a patch on either the Hnagover or Bridesmaids. Probably worth 5 out of ten and an ok 2 star film. I agree with Scrumpyjack that Noel Clarke is now in the last chance saloon filmwise. After a series of flops this does little to raise a sinking star that is his film making career.

  • I saw The Knot last night I got to agree with the reviews not just from Timeout but all major publications - it's possibly the worst British comedy ever made. Why the producer would even think to defend it is beyond me, particularly using arguments that 'it took a lot of blood sweat and tears to make' - so what! That makes it more embarassing to have put so much into what is clearly a very poor excuse for a film. Human torture involves a lot of blood, sweat and tears but doesn't make it right. It's films like this that give the british film industry a bad name. Shame on you. When is Noel Clarke actually gonna go to film and acting school and learn something - I guess he's making something of a career from bluffing so far. It's zero star rating from me.

  • What did I think the new British comedy film, The Knot? Absolutely loved it, laughed the whole way through! At a time where I think we all need cheering up as a nation, the movie really nailed it! It portrayed the very stressful subject of the wedding and events leading up to it in a very clever and yet very funny and emotional way. I am not normally that fond of comedy films but actually thought it was very funny indeed.

  • Since HEARTLESS and his 2009 BAFTA, everything (bar SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL) Clarke has touched has been poison. Really liked him in the Eccleston Dr. Who, but no longer. Pass from me, sorry.

  • I think you raised a very good point. I am, we are (admittedly on occasions) overly sensitive, but mostly because we are passionate about making films and in particular making this film. This is not just 'a job'. This is my first feature film. It took a lot of work, blood, sweat and tears to get it financed, made and distributed. It is a minor miracle to be able to watch it in 50 cinemas nationwide and in Ireland. And I keep on going to screenings where the audience experience is wildly different from the dismissive reviews. But don't get me wrong. I agree 100% with you that opinions differ, and I appreciate that everyone is entitled their opinion. I guess with more films under my belt I will get more blasè and get used to this 'games'. Maybe not. However for now, I will still marvel at the miracle of people coming to cinema to watch it, buy their popcorn, enjoy it, clap come out of it with a smaile and say thank you at the end to every screening. At least to the ones where I've been. And so far we've had a few. Tonight hopefully another one at CIneworld O2. Opinions, thank God, do differ. All the best to you all and Timeout and apologies for my overt display of emotions. Im Italian after all. Take care e

  • Is everyone associated with this film so overly sensitive? Along with the producer, it seems like Enrico doesn't want to hear any form of criticism. British comedy has an uphill battle to convince critics and audiences alike because, regrettably, a lot of it is predictable, clicheed and quite simply not funny - without trying to incur the wrath of Enrico, has he possibly considered that the Knot might just fall into one of these categories? I've just witnessed a very close friend dealing with some pretty unflattering words from Time Out in connection to the film Outside Bet. Despite this, Mark Kermode had it in his top 5 for a number of weeks. He dealt with it because he recognised. very early on, that opinions differ. Perhaps Enrico should stop throwing his toys out of his pram and recognise that not everyone has to agree with his point of view.
