When Cormac McCarthy’s brutal saga of post-apocalyptic angst won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007, a big screen adaptation became inevitable. Whether or not this was a good idea seemed irrelevant: it was a bestselling book with a timely, inherently cinematic theme; the movie had to be made.

‘The Proposition’ director John Hillcoat’s film is as direct and unflinching an adaptation as one could reasonably hope for. A man (Viggo Mortensen) and a boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) wander the American wasteland after an unnamed ecological disaster. The trees are bare, the animals dead, the few human survivors starving, desperate, often violent, occasionally monstrous.‘The Road’ is certainly the bleakest and potentially the least commercial product in recent Hollywood history. Both book and movie suffer from the same inherent weakness – they exist purely to make you miserable. Sure, there’s a smattering of subtext – a little eco-politics here, a spot of family psychology there – but the central purpose is to break your heart and shatter your soul.

On which level, Hillcoat’s movie is a resounding triumph. Stunning landscape photography sets the melancholy mood, and Nick Cave’s wrenching score reinforces it. But it is the performances that ultimately hold the film together. We expect this kind of selfless professionalism from Mortensen, and McPhee is appropriately sad-eyed as his long-suffering son, but it’s the incidental characters who steal the show, notably Robert Duvall in a startling cameo which not only distils the film’s key themes into a single three-minute scene, but singlehandedly lifts a potentially drab affair into something quietly impressive. Just don’t expect to walk out smiling.

  • For all those complaining that this film does not explain why the world ended, ue your imagination, or more thoughtfully: your brain. Through imagery, it is made clear that the planet is simply dieing. Tree's falling all over, random earthquakes. No? The film rightfully focuses more on the aftermath, and mans will to survive, whilst also looking in depth to human perceptions, and relations between a man and his son. If you want a clear pristine OMG the world is ending go and see the flankly shite 2012. If you want to see something brillaintly realistic, and atmospheric then see Th Road. For those of you who gave it such a bad score, prehaps your more suited to on-slaugh of trash hollywood see's to continuelly spew out.

  • Haven't read the novel but the film seems so vague about what actually has happened that leaves humanity in this predicament - we're left to assume some stereotypical Hollywood natural/man-made disaster, whereas detail would've helped engage me. It is vital, because the characters decisions, motivations are totally dependent on what is or isn't possible or likely to happen. Rather like a fantasy movie, though, we're left thinking anything or nothing can happen - there are no rules. Is there plant life to eat? Will they find civilisation amongst the decayed wilderness, is there any end to this 'road'? Being completely in the dark doesn't make it mysterious and interesting but alienating and dull!

  • I found the film a fairly faithful telling of the story from the book. Interesting that some people have dissed the ending, and I admit I thought it seemed a bit too perfect but having checked back in the book, its pretty much word for word ending. I think some of the bad reviews are more down to the misrepresentation of the film in the trailer and being described as a horror film so people come out disappointed.

  • Crushingly depressing. Very well executed and terrifically acted. Don't expect to be uplifted or affirmed. This is an uncompromising and ruthless story but it does make you think. Unbiased and indifferent to the viewer (with the exception of the ending, which didn't fit in with the rest of the film at all.) Certainly very interesting and thought provoking but you might want to have some trashy comedy ready to watch afterwards!

  • Excellent film but poor ending. However I came out the cinema feeling about as happy as a man just told he's got terminal cancer. I'm not kidding - I felt numb and depressed. So great film but not something you'd want to watch on a regular basis!

  • Yes it was a depressing and relentlessly drab film to see, not sure why I sat through it. A short appearance by M K Williams (Omar Little) cheered me up before the smaltzy inevitable Hollywood upbeat ending. Put me in the mood for some rootcanal work without anaesthetic.

  • kinda wish i read reviews before i watched this. it was pretty dull and depressing pretty much the whole way through. flashbacks were confusing if anything. there was no real start to the film no reason why the devastation happened. the characters also looked too strange as if they were all abnormal before the event occurred. All in all this didn't seem thought out right and lacked a lot of oomph and emotion. i would advise you not to waste your time if you expect a good film, the biggest let down was the ending.. oh and the beginning.. oh and the rest of it

  • It beats me how such trash ever reaches the cinema. This movie is slow and tedious from the start. If you want to be depressed then this is your movie. Viggo Mortensen is the only saving grace in a waste of film. From the start the flashbacks aren't convincing and little or no explanation is given as to why the world got into such a mess. Pitiful

  • Crikey, the film made me feel grumpy. I sat just waiting for a miracle, some action; a point to the film but alas it never came! Guy Pearce appeared in the trailer yet appeared for a minute at the end and how unbelievable was Charleze's role... A miserable film that failed to move or stir my emotions... I'd take a refund!
