Six directors – including Michael Powell and the Korda brothers – were responsible for this delightful hocus-pocus of colour and dashing adventure. Think of it as a special effects-ridden epic for grown-up kids, a la ‘Star Wars’ and ‘The Arabian Nights’. Made in Britain during the Blitz, ‘The Thief of Bagdad’ is both magical and classically entertaining, and features several memorable highlights, most notably Rex Ingram as a Genie in a bottle and Sabu as the elephant boy thief who accompanies the cast-out Prince Ahmad on a spellbinding fantasy-filled quest.
