Having cut his fangs on tween revenger ‘Hard Candy’ and inventive bloodsucker ‘30 Days of Night’, could director David Slade kick off a ‘Harry Potter’-like reinvigoration of the ‘Twilight’ series? Well, sort of: ‘Eclipse’ is a step up from the painfully anaemic ‘New Moon’, and it’s clearly the work of a filmmaker keen to put his own stamp on the series. But Slade is constrained at every turn by the sheer, crushing lifelessness of author Stephenie Meyer’s material.

‘Eclipse’ barely advances the story at all: we’re still stuck in the town of Forks, where moody heroine Bella  (Kristen Stewart) is forced to choose between undead love-of-her-life Edward (Robert Pattinson) and musclebound werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner). There are lots of other characters – silly names are dropped with dizzying regularity – but none of them actually seem to do very much.

Slade directs with  flair: his action sequences, though small in scale, have real drive, and a series of surprisingly grim Civil War flashbacks enable him to utilise a different visual palette from the usual drab greens and greys.

But he can’t disguise the massive flaws inherent in the screenplay: the slipshod plotting, whiny, self-serious tone and excruciating abstinence-first subplot. The biggest problem remains the characters: neither Slade nor Stewart are capable of turning manipulative whinger Bella  into anything more than a joyless black hole sucking the life from every scene, while the only performer capable of giving her part any spark, Anna Kendrick, is completely sidelined this time around. Strictly for Twihards.

Rosalie (Bahahaha)

Thought this was much better than the 2nd film. I watched twice, once with my girlfriends who are all Twihard fans, and then with my boyfriend (27, and very reluctabnt to go, had to be bribed) He was actually pleasantly surprised and has asked if he can come with me and my girls when the fourth film is released. It has a solid story and is fast-paced. Ignoring the 'love triangle' (there clearly isn't one, Jacob is never going to get Bella, lets be honest) i really enjoyed the new characters, the sometimes scary undertones and the impressive visual imagery. Also want to point out that to those who have invested a lot of time in reading the books and watching the films, the flashbacks of Jasper and Rosalie are really rewarding - it's nice for some of the other characters to have some depth. One last thing - I would never have picked Stewart to play Bella, she distracts me with her constant stammering/pausing/twitching. Having watched interviews with the actress, this is not actually acting, she is like that in reality.

Foe example I'm a Saw fan, 4 was a 1 star film but I love the rest. I liked Twilight 2, thought it was very good, I thought 1 was ok, bit boring, 3 was rushed I think, but I'm curious to see how it ends! I'm open to almost all movies, except chick flix of course! lol

Thomas Noctor

I apologise if I offended any fans here, I'm sorry, I do like the series it's why I go to the movies! I just didn't like this one, sorry guys!

Muse couldn't even save this. Topless teens, a whimpy Vampire, this is aimed at thirteen year old girls. I watched them all now, 2 is good but this is a let down. Would two species really risk their futures for a mortal? Enough said! I'll watch the last two movies just to see the outcome

Amy

You have a choice- so did I. Wish I hadn't bothered.....and who wrote the script.... There are so many good films out there right now....try them instead.

To be honest with you i think this film would be better if there WAS less talk abouthaving sex! I had to take my daughter to see it and afterwards she started repeating things that she shouldn't even know... I loved it but i was not happy about some of the content.. For gods sake my daughter won't stop talking about really wanting to have sex with Jacob To be honest i wouldn't mind it myself but my daughter.. Thats just not right!!!!!!!!!

Poppy.

Well, this was the first twilight film i've seen and to be perfectly honest, i loved it! I went out the next day and bought the first and second one. i can't wait for eclipse to come out on dvd. I have watched new moon four times in three days! And if you aren't a fan already- i advise you to just go and see it!

Its SLIGHTLY better than the second one. Acceptable entertainment in a "bargin Tuesday" type of way. No more to say. 4+/10

Bekki

this is the best twilight film yet, i think it could have been made slightly better however i still enjoyed it and think it covered more from the book than any of the other films...those people who arnt twilight fans and are moaning about it then why go and watch it?

louise

My best friend went to see this film earlier on in the week and she used to be " team jacob" but as soon as she saw him running around after bella like a puppy she instantly went off him and refused to talk about the series. The only comment i got was that my friend thinks bella is a slut when all she can talk about is having sex with edward , who would want to do that anyway edward is a freak !

mat

a rubish film that relies on young girls to rake in there millions. come on people wake up.

Elizabeth Anderson

As an aunt I am required on many occasions to take my nieces and nephews to films. The latest being Avatar;Street Dancers and Shrek. I must admit I really enjoyed them. However, this film is most depressing, boring, dullest film I have seen in years. The people who are making money out of this must be laughing all the way to the bank. It must have cost buttons to make and they are raking in millions. My concern is the affect this genre will have on young women and their idea of romance. All I could of was when is this going to end

Joanne

I really enjoyed the film. The fight scene was amazing. Some people don't know good movies when they see them

I think this is the best movie yet. And despite what people say, it has all of the main events from the book in. Like the party, bella hitting jacob, edward and bella getting engaged, ect.. I also think that all performances, especially kristens and robs were amazing and I am really looking forward to breaking dawn.

I feel as though my enjoyment of this film has been spoilt by too much exposure to cynical critiques and feminist diatribes aimed at the whole Twilight series, but it deserves to be recognised for the generally decent entertainment it is, Sure, the idea of a vampire bent on pre-marital chastity is pretty laughable, and the spectacle of Jacob and Edward competing for Bella is demeaning, but if you want a chick flick with fangs and don't mind overdosing on Teen emo angst, you will enjoy this film. It's a little slow in parts but some of the fight scenes are quite visually appealing, even if they seem to involve more prolonged and slightly silly sprinting than actual fighting. Finally the message of the third film is clear:- be yourself, not who others say you should be (choose the vampire who represents the world where you belong, rather than the werewolf who represents the world where you ought to belong). I'm not sure that I agree with the message, or that the message even matters, but it's not about sex, desire or even love. It's simply about teen angst and self-acceptance.

Emma

this film is fab ! bella does my absolute head in but... team jacob all the way !!!!

For girls SHOULD put out-Your comment was insightful. This is a brilliant film, not in terms of film theory and critique, but in terms of Foucault's lifetime work that is changing history and the rest of the social sciences. In brief this film is about DESIRE and the sexual longing that accompanies it. The film is a History of Sexuality in the Western world. It's all there. Yes Meyer is not the best writer, but her theme is deep. This is why it resonates and that is something the critics cannot come to terms with because they cannot understand it. I shall be writing about it on my blog foucaultseye at some point soon. The critics are all wrong to view it in terms of the Discourse of film. The Twilight Saga is an event, not a single film. It is a statement in the history of sexuality. The critics come from the era of Recreational Sex. Desire is irrelevant. It leads to deSade and Limit Experiences in sex (pornography, SM etc). The critics reviewing this film so far do not recognize Desire (Lacan, philosophy, Deleuze, Guartarr) as they themselves are not steeped in modern philosophy which concerns itself with Desire. I thought you might like to know all this and that you are not flying in the face of convention. You might like to start with Foucault's History of Sexuality vol I, II, III. I doubt Stepheie Meyer's is ery much aware of this break in history, but her unconscious is, and that is what a writer writes from. It is why Lou Andreas-Salome told Rilke not to undergo psychoanalysis to cure his demons.

Weird "safe" bad boy drama obviously aimed at pre-teens. The director could do nothing with this derivative sucky tale of a boring everyteen more lifeless than her undead boyfriend. Why does Lisa Simpson's "Non Threatening Boys" come to mind? I wonder...

kevin the great

warewolfes, undead, zombies ,lets face it this black and white film made in 1954 surely does not deserve to be rereleased. the special effects were a joke you could clearly see strings on the puppets. also having a semi naked jimmy krankie in every scene ,did not advance the plot. cmon give us twihards u rated fun

Do any of the children posting comments here realise that Time Out is a magazine for adults, hence the reviews are the opinions of adults aimed at adult filmgoers. I'm sure CBeebies loved the film if that's any consolation.

Paul

I should not have seen this film straight after the London Gay Pride March today as both were full of semi-nude muscle Maries. This is a film for hormonal girls, so best we adults butt out and let the girls vote on Team Pat or Team Taylor. Sometimes we adults just don't belong and this is one of those times. Pass.
