Top Cat: The Movie (U)

This was a great Top Cat movie ‘most effectual’! Go see it. It was made in Mexico, nothing wrong there. The voices were the as good as in the original, I could not detect dubbing. It was fun with an up-to-date story involving ‘big brother’ and the Mayor of New York. There were some very funny moments where the characters showed they were up with modern technology. There were great philosophical jokes and laughs were heard from Adults and Kids. Tip top.

Avoid at all cost. Went with boys 5 and 7 without knowing anything about it, just an afternoon at the flicks, unprepared. Admittedly kids did crack one or two laughs so they get engaged into it but it will cost £3 at your supermarket in 2 months when I blew £15 to get in. Not worth the difference

Dire - Absolute rubbish sad remake of one of my all time classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. This is so scary in parts that kids in the theatre hid their faces or cried leading to six families walking out. The story is wafer thin and the overdub voices are but a facsimile of the originals plus the sets look amateur. No-one even laughed at the mis-fed jokes and overall it left me with a bitter memory of ninety wasted minutes. Worst part of it was updating it to 21st Century NYC.

@ian. For your information I have seen both films, in full, Unlke some reviewers I tend to sit through them to the end not give up on them after half an hour. Whether you like it or not Hanna Barbera made some of the greatest cartoons ever. Fans feel very possessive of things. You only have to read comic or gothic novel fans views of some film adaptatins of their favourites. This is a poor cheaply made movie that is a travesty, in my opinion, compared to some of the great movies and cartoons they made. Some remakes are good others are poor imitations of the original. I think this is the latter. It would appear looking at several reviews I have read I am not alone in this view.

@Ian: Have you seen the movie? It's all well and good posting HB's award history, but the idea of user reviews is you post what you thought was good/bad/indifferent about the movie. I remember you've previously posted your "review" of a film which you hadn't seen - namely "Mirror Mirror" - which you'd entirely judged from a 3 minute trailer.

Can you hear a whirring sound? It is William Hanna and Joseph Barbara spinning in their graves. Hanna Barbara won seven, yes really seven, Oscars for Tom & Jerry cartoons. They also brought us the Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Wacky Races and Hong Kong Phoey as well as Top Cat and they do this to one of their great cartoons. A total travesty!
