The cars – are they here to help us or destroy us? Not an idle question in these carbon-conscious times, and Michael Bay’s ’splosiongasmic ’botfest could, at a stretch, be parsed as a grand-scale id-fantasy of America’s doomed infatuation with the internal combustion engine: both goodies and baddies look sexy as hell, and both leave destruction in their wake. You could even tease an oil-anxiety subtext out of the film’s overseas settings: a spot of blowback in the Middle East and a salutary warning against exploratory polar digging.

As in the ’80s cartoon series/corporate promotional tool on which the movie is based, Earth is the battlefield for two tribes of ancient alien robots who can shape-shift into items of our technology. (They also seem to have developed a kind of robo-parkour.) The evil, spiky Decepticons and the friendly but, in this version, equally spiky Autobots are slugging it out for control of a magic Rubik’s Cube; caught in the middle is high-school kid Sam (Shia LaBeouf), who inadvertently picks up a battered Autobot at a secondhand car lot and develops an even bigger crush on it than he has on the girl from history class (Megan Fox).

Sprawling, hardware-heavy, gung-ho with a streak of cruel humour, ‘Transformers’ is a Michael Bay movie, all right. It’s also about as nimble as a 30-foot behemoth with fried navigation circuits, lunging and lumbering from misfiring comic set-piece to messy pitched battle, landing the occasional bullseye along the way. John Turturro is good value as a sleazy spook but you’ll search in vain for anything like characterisation elsewhere, especially among the robots themselves. Less than meets… you know.

  • Well after having spoken to a number of people who have seen the film, the numbers a re equally split between those who like it and those who do not. I just want to reaffirm that it is rubbish, even the special effects aren't that special, the fight scenes are shaky and move too fast so you can't make out who is landing what blow. The stroy line would just about keep an 8 year old appeased. All in all it was a dire film made to cash in on the memories of adults and adulation of kids. Not a film worth watching, in fact i wish i had downloaded it or got it on pirate first. I'm still upset about the 2.5 hours or so the film lasted that I won't be getting back. What a crock of shite.

  • Obviously most of you who have commented here have either A.) Never followed Transformers from the early 80's or researched them and B.) sat through the movie with your eyes closed. This film has more depth than you can imagine. Just look in to the past to find references!!! 9/10

  • What an absolute cretinous idiot this "chris" guy above me is! Great review you posted there, simpleton (and that goes for the rest of you morons who criticise without valid argument)... Anyway, time for a more constructive review: This film is THE ultimate popcorn movie- Highly recommended. So what if the Decepticons don't show up until late on, so what if the love story is a tad cheesy and contrived? Get a grip people, this is a great, fun film with gratitous effects shots like you've never seen before. And as an introduction to this new, modern-day reimagination of the Transformers franchise I think it does a great job. Highly recommended!

  • No doubt THE best action film for a very long time. Yes, it is a bit corny. But I’m pretty sure this is just so the girls don’t get bored! You know the guys would have been happy with two hours of just the robots fighting! The only thing I found a bit far fetched was the part when the robots were ‘hiding’ in the garden. I’m pretty sure I’d hear my daughter’s transformer buddies hiding round the back of MY house! They could have got around this by making it into a comic book type movie and could have had it as a father reading it to his son at bedtime (sorry, the frustrated writer in me is showing it’s ugly head!) This way they could have got way with anything. Anyway, the corny-ness and girly love story bits were a small price to pay for what is no doubt a great movie.

  • Michael flopped hard. Story line was poor and more of a romantic film than an action movie. The CGI is amazing but like many movie fight scenes is too fast so your eyes can keep up with the action. There we too many of the original transformers missed out which will dissapoint alot of fans of the original series. Also Megatron was quite clearly a gun in the cartoon so why is he a plane now? Where was opimus's trailer? Why was Starscream changed from an f-15 to a raptor? Why did optimus get a thrashing every time he fought? On the upside the CGI is visually stunning and there are some really funny moments in the film. Megan fox is beautiful. We'll worth watching but fans of the original series will be left thinking that it could have been better.

  • Does the person who wrote this article have any actual clue what they're on about? Perhaps you should dock their pay for this shambles, or just straight out fire them. If a film critic doesn't know when awesome hits you round the face in the form of a film, then they need to seriously go back to primary school. Transformers is the best ever. EVER.
