This is a witty reversal of the slasher movie template. Two upwardly mobile hillbillies (crotchety dreamer Alan Tudyk and cuddly doofus Tyler Labine) buy a holiday cabin only to find it besieged by obnoxious college kids convinced their neighbours are serial killers. Misconception piles upon misunderstanding, and matters aren’t helped by the fact that the judgemental jocks keep accidentally sticking their feet in bear traps and tumbling into woodchippers, much to the bemusement of our heroes. Relying as much on indie amiability as buckets of blood ‘n’ guts (though there is plenty of the latter), ‘Tucker & Dale’ is as shaggily charming and deceptively smart as its goofy leads. The final act is slightly bogged down when the filmmakers decide to ditch slapstick splatter for try-hard horror movie hysterics, but mostly first-time director Eli Craig keeps things ticking along beautifully. Fans of inventive, good-humoured gore, step right up.

Having never heard of this film before, i wasn't expecting much when i put it on. Maybe this helped with the enjoyment of the film because it wasn't cursed with any hype to live up to. Bearing that in mind i wouldn't want to curse it myself with over the top praise, so i'll just say this.. This is probably one of the best films you will ever see in your life ever. Ever. Even if you're young now, like 15 or something and you live to be very old like 105 or more, you would still think this is one of the greatest films ever made, ever.

Fun for a night when you want to give your brain a rest, there's just enough in the central joke to stretch to 90 minutes, but really, only just. Alan Tudyk is a class act, and it's clear in the bonus interviews that the filmmakers all realised that the relationship between the two men is central. Sadly they didn't also realise that the relationship between Dale and Allison is just as crucial, and bother to cast a good actor in the female lead instead of a pretty one. Just a bit more oomph could have made this a classic comedy, as it stands it's an okay one.
