Could Manchester’s biggest eyesore finally be sorted out?

A large abandoned development site in Manchester city centre could finally be tidied up and have something built on it, under new plans.

The one-acre site on the junction of Princess Street and Whitworth Street has been empty for more than 20 years and was originally occupied by four warehouses, the last of which was knocked down back in 1993.

A developer secured planning permission to build a hotel and apartments, a scheme named ‘Origin’, in 2007 but work ground to a halt with only part of the foundations and the 300-space basement car park built.

Since then, the prominent city centre site has been surrounded by hoardings and left to rot.

But a new developer has now bought the site and has renewed plans for it.

Urban & Civic is planning to build 240 flats in two blocks, a four-star hotel, units for restaurants and retailers and a landscaped public square. The four-level basement car park will remain.

More information on the plans will be unveiled at a public exhibition at the Doubletree Hilton near Piccadilly Station next month so members of the public can find out about the scheme and discuss it with the team behind the development.

The public exhibition takes place Friday September 11 1.30-7.30pm and Saturday September 12 10am-4pm. The exhibition boards and a comment form will also be available on the development’s website from September 11, and you can have your say up until September 27.

But does Manchester city centre need another hotel? What do you want to see done with the site? Let us know in the comments.
