Built on the site of the original Santa Maria della Stella convent after the latter burned to the ground, Palazzo delle Stelline was designated by the far-famed Carlo Borromeo as an orphanage in 1578 - and continued to function as such until the 1970s. In 1986, the local municipality established the Fondazione Stelline, whose mission is to preserve the 500-year old building and promote cultural events in the Magenta neighbourhood.
Across a pretty internal courtyard is a small temporary exhibition space, the Sala del Collezionista, far from the traffic of corso Magenta. Featured shows range from 18th-century works by Lombard painter Cesare Ligari to sculptures by contemporary light artist, Massimo Uberti.
