A statue of composer Giuseppe Verdi presides over piazza Buonarroti, where a neo-Romanesque palazzo, designed in 1899 by architect Camillo Boito (the top floor is a post-war addition), houses a retirement home for musicians. Across the courtyard - often filled with the sound of retired tenors or sopranos running through a few scales - stairs lead down to the crypt where Verdi and his wife Giuseppina Strepponi are buried.
