A$AP Rocky 'Long.Live.A$AP'
Time Out says
New York rap crown-prince A$AP Rocky spent 2012 touring the sound of his ‘Live.Love.A$AP’ mixtape – NYC rhyming swagger combined with syrupy, slowed-down beats in the Houston style. But on this debut album the self-proclaimed ‘pretty motherfucker’ expands his repertoire to include synthy top lines and pop hooks. The result is startlingly cohesive: lush, lachrymose arrangements mingle with ol’ fashioned boom bap, while soul samples loop over trap-inflected beats. Despite some shambolic collaborations (2 Chainz on the mic; Skrillex on the boards), Rocky retains his edge, keeping up the dirty south double-time rap style he’s made an artform out of. ‘Pretty’? We’d call it almost perfect. Nick Aveling
