Jessica Ware 'Devotion'

Rating: 4/5

No cynicism please, Jessie Ware is the real deal. This album of complex productions and heartfelt vocals is heavily indebted to the R&B, pop and dance music of the ’80s and early ’90s (‘Still Love Me’ is a mix of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ and A Guy Called Gerald’s acid house classic ‘Voodoo Ray’) but is also weird and warped enough to sound entirely of the moment. Title track ‘Devotion’ is the stand-out, with its deep and dissonant bassline making Ware’s romantic plea – ‘need your devotion’ – all the more bittersweet. Tender, smart and sassy, this deserves to be huge. Jonny Ensall
