Held yearly on the fifteenth night of the seventh lunar month, the Penang Hungry Ghost Festival is a month-long festivity celebrated by the Chinese community. Based on Chinese traditional beliefs, the festival marks the days when spirits descend on this earth and roam freely among us. Staged opera performances, live puppet shows and ancestor worship are part of the traditions held to appease the spirits.
