They say change is the only constant in Tokyo, with the unstoppable force euphemistically known as 'redevelopment' always looking for new spots of land to occupy with shopping malls, office towers or 'green spaces'. Just like in years past, 2016 will see plenty of shiny new facilities opened across the city, and practically all of them claim to offer never-before-seen ways to consume, imbibe, be happy and so on. Here are nine of the most attractive spots set to begin business over the next six months or so – better get those wallets out, eh?

The best new openings for 2016

  • Shopping
  • Department stores
  • Ginza
Open March 31

The closing of Shibuya's Tokyu Plaza last spring was mourned by many Tokyoites, and it remains to be seen if this Ginza reincarnation of the beloved shopping oasis can live up to expectations. Early signs are promising, however, with the exterior meant to recreate the appearance of traditional Edo Kiriko glass and the insides expected to house a whopping 125 stores...
Marine & Walk Yokohama
  • Shopping
  • Arcades
  • Minato Mirai
Open March 2016

Building on the legacy of the nearby Red Brick Warehouse, the bayside Minato Mirai area is getting another old-new centre of retail and culture in 2016. Utilising some of the aged brick warehouses still left on the waterfront, Marine & Walk will be a multi-structure 'open mall' with attractive ocean view...

  • Shopping
  • Shinjuku
The seemingly endless construction mess on the south side of Shinjuku Station is finally clearing up: opening on March 25, this huge and confusingly named shopping mall is supposed to blend seamlessly into the cityscape around the station's New South exit...
Tri-Seven Roppongi
  • Things to do
  • Roppongi
Open sometime in spring

The name is a play on the street address (7-7-7 Roppongi), but there are precious few other quirky details available on this rather dry-looking shopping and business complex scheduled to open right across the street from Tokyo Midtown...

Atré Ebisu West Building
  • Shopping
  • Department stores
  • Ebisu
Open sometime in spring

With Ebisu consistently scoring in the top three of Tokyo's 'most desirable neighbourhood' rankings, it's no wonder that the local station mall is getting a huge upgrade: all those trend-hunting out-of-towners need to be accommodated somehow before they start pouring out onto the side streets and actually discovering the area's many hidden treasures...
Ginza Place
  • Shopping
  • Ginza
Scheduled to start business at some point in summer 2016, the unimaginatively named Place sits right by the Yonchome crossing near the Sony Building, and will apparently tower over its neighbours both in terms of height and with an impactful, all-white exterior...

Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho
  • Things to do
  • Kioicho
Open sometime in summer

Built on the site of the old Akasaka Grand Prince Hotel, the long-awaited Garden Terrace is sure to achieve instant landmark status in the Kioicho-Nagatacho area – with a total of 38 floors in the main tower and 23 in the residential complex next door, this one competes with sheer scale...
Kyobashi Edogrand
  • Shopping
  • Kyobashi
Open sometime in autumn

A curious combo that pairs a newly constructed, massive glass-and-steel skyscraper with the carefully renovated, historical Meidi-ya Kyobashi building, Edogrand is supposed to feature plenty of open spaces both indoors and outdoors, giving this soon-to-be Kyobashi landmark a vaguely futuristic feel...

Snoopy Museum
  • Art
  • Pop art
  • Machida
Snoopy fans in Tokyo sure have it good: hot on the heels of last year's Peanuts Cafe opening comes news that the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA, will be setting up a temporary satellite location in Roppongi this spring. The full details are yet to be announced, but visitors will at least be able to view plenty of...
