Ten magical movie nights with a difference

It's already been a bumper year in Bristol for movies and movie-related events. So far, we've had cinemas on boats, in hot tubs, outside castles and in the woods - and you'll be glad to hear that there's still plenty more in store for film lovers who like to catch a flick somewhere out of the ordinary.

Here are just a few events you can look forward to over the coming months...

Bristol Sunset Cinema

Flash Gordon

After the fantastic turnout for 'The Princess Bride' at Blaise castle in August, the weather forecasts are looking good for Bristol Sunset Cinema's second outdoor screening: 'Flash Gordon', on September 26.

This time, the cult 1980 sci-fi classic will be shown at the Clifton Observatory – a stunning venue for a sunset and a suitably space-themed destination for the movie.

Tickets are still available here, so bring a picnic, something to sit on and wrap up snug.

Bristol Sunset Cinema present: 'Flash Gordon'. Saturday September 26, 8.30pm. Clifton Observatory, Litfield Place, Clifton, Bristol BS8 3LT.

Zion Bristol

Back to the Future

With movie events in Bristol proving so popular, it's understandable that Zion Bristol – a converted church in Bedminster Down – wants a piece of the action, too. On September 26, Zion will be screening the ever-popular 'Back to the Future'.

Along with the film, there'll be a bar and tuck shop open all evening selling '80s style hotdogs and fries. Plus, there'll be a prize for the best 'Back to the Future' fancy dress. All proceeds go towards installing a more permanent projection screen at Zion. You can find more information and book tickets here.

Zion Bristol present: 'Back to the Future'. Saturday September 26, 7.30pm. Zion Bristol, Bishopsworth Road, Bristol, BS13 7LW.

Backyard Cinema

The Dark Knight

Teaming up with Backyard Cinema, you'll find several outdoor screenings taking place at Arnos Vale on Bath Road over the coming weeks, all complemented by the Victorian cemetery setting.

First up is 'The Dark Knight' on September 26, followed by a suitably spooking screening of 'The Addams Family' and 'The Blair Witch Project' on October 29.

Tickets for all screenings are available here. Again, bring something to sit on and warm to wear, but food and drink will be available to purchase on site.

Backyard Cinema present: 'The Dark Knight'. Saturday September 26, 8.30pm. 'The Addams Family' (4.30pm) and 'The Blair Witch Project' (8.30pm), Thursday October 29. Arnos Vale Cemetery, West Lodge, Bath Road, Bristol, City of Bristol BS4 3EW.

Bristol Bad Film Club

Just because the film is bad, it doesn't mean the experience of watching it has to be. The Bristol Bad Film Club been perfecting the art of unusual movie screenings for unashamedly terrible films.

Next up is 'Never Too Young To Die', an outrageously '80's pastiche of a James Bond film, starring a cross-dressing Gene Simmons as the villain. This will take place on October 8, at The Station on Silver Street - the old fire station in the centre of town that's now a cafe and performance space.

You can find out more about the movie and grab tickets here.

Bristol Bad Film Club present: 'Never Too Young To Die'. Thursday October 8, 8pm. The Station, Silver Street, Bristol, BS1 2AG.

Cannoli & Gun

Silence of the Lambs

If you haven't read our interview with them yet, Cannoli & Gun show movies accompanied by an appropriate meal. The next film to be screened – 'The Silence of the Lambs' – illustrates the concept perfectly.

Hosted by the Colston Street branch of Italian restaurant Rosemarino on October 19, you can sit down to watch the sinister thriller while you tuck into, you guessed it, a meal of liver and fava beans, washed down with a nice chianti. You can buy tickets here.

If that sounds a bit too terrifying/sophisticated for your tastes, then a showing of '80s sci-fi comedy 'Spaceballs' on November 18 at the Crofters Rights should fit the bill. Not only can you enjoy this  'Star Wars' spoof, you can scoff pizza at the same time. Tickets for this event are available here

Cannoli & Gun present: 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Monday October 19, 7pm. Rosemarino, 90 Colston Street, Bristol, BS1 5BB.

'Spaceballs'. Wednesday November 18, 7pm. Crofters Rights, 117-119 Stokes Croft, Bristol, BS1 3RW.

The Luna Cinema

Hot Fuzz

Just outside Bristol is the imposing Victorian Gothic-revival residence of Tyntesfield, which will be hosting two days of open air screenings with The Luna Cinema in October.

First up is a screening of 'Hot Fuzz' on October 2, followed by 'Shaun the Sheep' on October 3. As an outdoor movie, you'll want to dress appropriately for the weather and are free to bring a picnic with you. However, The Luna Cinema has organised an Estrella sponsored bar, with hot food courtesy of BBQ specialists Eat the Smoke and pizza from Flame Baked Pizza.

You can buy tickets for both events here.

The Luna Cinema present: 'Hot Fuzz'. Friday October 2, 6.30pm. 'Shaun the Sheep'. Saturday October 3, 6.30pm. Tyntesfield House, Wraxall, Bristol, North Somerset, BS48 1NX.
