It was in the village of Kouklia that the most sensual goddess of the island was lavishly worshipped. Although the original sanctuary has been ravaged by time and earthquakes, with a little imagination you can visualise its former opulence. The palace here was renowned throughout the ancient world not only as a place of fabulous wealth - a veritable Versailles of its time - but also as one of the great religious centres of the Greek and Roman world. Today, only the sun-baked ruins of the shrine remain. Park in the shade of the trees and make your way to the museum, housed in an impressive medieval Lusignan Manor which was built on the actual site. It's home to a fascinating collection of artifacts, gleaned from the cult of Aphrodite.
