A very smart hotel overlooking St Stephen's Green (and with the benefit of an in-house Michelin-starred restaurant, Thornton's), the Fitzwilliam is undeniably posh, and yet it remains refreshingly free from the kind of snobbish attitude affected by some of the city's other blue-chip hotels. That's not to say it doesn't have plenty to show off about: effortlessly elegant guest rooms have all the trimmings, right down to fresh flowers and duck-down duvets, and bathrooms packed with lovely products and thick, fluffy towels.

The pared-down glamour of the lobby and the helpful staff give you a sense of what's in store from the moment you walk in. And if food is your thing, Kevin Thornton's eponymous restaurant will blow your socks off, or else there's the more low-key Citron, beloved of well-manicured ladies on their way to or from the Temple Bar boutiques.
