Founded in 1941, Opera Ireland is as close as Ireland gets to a national opera company. Guest performers have included Placido Domingo, José Carreras and even Luciano Pavarotti, who made his international debut with the company in a 1963 production of Rigoletto. After transforming itself in the 1980s into a more eclectic outfit, the company is as much at home with Verdi and Shostakovich as with Mark-Anthony Turnage's Silver Tassie. Its two short seasons at the Gaiety Theatre are in autumn and spring.
