Set in large, reasonably well-kept grounds and now in the care of the local authority, this neo-Jacobean fortified property was built in the 1590s (as a tower house for Sir Archibald Napier), extended during the 1820s and last used as a private home in 1926, when then-owner William Reid left it to the nation. Reid and his wife were enthusiastic antiques collectors who furnished the house with their finds; the property's Edwardian interiors have been carefully preserved. Access is by tour only (around 50 minutes); special group tours can be arranged if you call ahead.
