Sean Connery tops list of Scottish screen stars - who else made the top 10?

Somewhat predictably, Sean Connery has topped a list of Scotland's greatest screen talents, with the equally unsurprising Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy and David Tennant also appearing in the top 10. The list was put together by Odeon Cinemas, who surveyed over 1000 Scots to get the results, to promote the opening of their latest seven-screen multiplex in Fort Kinnaird.

The list wasn't entirely without surprises - Gerard Butler and Alan Cumming have starred in more than their fair share of rubbish films, so we reckon they earned their spots by sheer quantity of work rather than quality, while Hannah Gordon seems like a peculiar choice for the token woman as opposed to, say, Maggie Smith or Kelly MacDonald. Other notable omissions include Billy Connolly, Robert Carlyle, Brian Cox, Kate Dickie and Peter Mullan, though probably not John Barrowman. Oh, and Tilda Swinton was born in London, so don't even start.

1. Sean Connery, 84, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh - 25%
2. David Tennant, 43, Bathgate, West Lothian - 17%
3. Ewan McGregor, 43, Perth - 12%
4. Gerard Butler, 45, Paisley - 11%
5. Robbie Coltrane, 64, Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire - 9%
6. James McAvoy, 35, Port Glasgow - 8%
7. Peter Capaldi, 56, Glasgow - 6%
8. Alan Cumming, 50, Aberfeldy, Perthshire - 4%
9. John Hannah, 52, East Kilbride - 3%
10. Hannah Gordon, 73, Edinburgh - 2%
Other - 3%

In addition to the top 10, Odeon commissioned Scottish artist Ben Morris to create the actually pretty decent artwork you can see above, commemorating significant moments in Scottish film history (including 'Gregory's Girl', 'The Wicker Man', 'Highlander', 'Shallow Grave', 'Hallam Foe' and 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie'). The press release also informed us that 'Odeon' is actually an acronym standing for 'Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation', though we suspect it should technically be called a backronym since the Ancient Greek term 'odeon' somewhat predates company founder Deutsch's birth. But that doesn't have much to do with anything, really.

Odeon Fort Kinnaird will open on Friday March 20.
