Filling the historic premises vacated by the Scotsman newspaper, this hotel leapt straight into the city's upper echelon of places to stay when it opened in 2001. It subsequently struggled financially, but new ownership has brought fresh investment. The buzzing and ornate North Bridge Brasserie was relaunched in 2008 and the Spa & Healthclub followed in 2009, retaining its funky stainless-steel pool. The rooms have contemporary elements but remain in keeping with the building's Edwardian-baronial origins. Its sister hotel in the city is the Glasshouse.
