Noted polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton once lived in these premises, which is why, in recent years, the owners of Channings created three suites and two rooms on a Shackleton theme. Guests can now lie in an enormous bathtub and soak up the narrative from a huge print of his ship, the Endurance, on the wall adjacent. The hotel's other rooms are equally crisp and handsome, with the north-facing accommodation giving views to the Firth of Forth and Fife. It's a discreet hotel that feels far away from central Edinburgh but isn't, and with a decent basement bistro to boot.
