For years, Edinburgh was crying out for a central, mid-sized venue that could accommodate major touring bands. The city finally got its wish with the 2008 reopening of this old cinema, which hosted '80s gigs by the likes of New Order and the Smiths under its former identity of the Caley Palais. It spent the intervening years as a succession of tacky nightclubs, but the new owners stripped the walls back to their original art deco interior before booking the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Doves on to an impressive gig roster. There are also a few club nights.
