At its peak in the 1970s, the Lyceum was at the vanguard of a renaissance of local theatrical culture, and a breeding ground for leading directors such as Bill Bryden and Richard Eyre. The intervening decades were less radical but audiences remained loyal; since 2003, artistic director David Mark Thomson has built the company into one of the most popular in Scotland. A typical season might include some Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, the occasional new play and fresh translations of European classics.
